    Default Will departments hire you if youre on Inactive Reserve?

    Basically the title. Going to OCS possibly, want to come out and still firefight. Will departments hire you if you are inactive reserve status?

    I don't get you post.....you are going to OCS.....which means you have yet to serve a contract.....you can't be IRR unless you have served your initial contract requirements....ALL military contracts are for 8 years....broken up into 1,2,4, or 6 year active/drilling reserve status.


    BUT it is a federal offense for an employer to bar someone from empolyment because of their status in the IRR....

    Sorry, yes I will serve 8 years, but the last 4 is IRR. I was just making sure they couldn't not hire me due to that. Thanks for the reply!

    If you pass everything else and you're a fit for the department, they can't let your service in the Reserves/Guard (active or inactive) be a reason for not hiring you. In fact, a lot of depts support their Reserve/Guard members well.

    It depends on the employer, some are supportive, others are not. I've seen plenty of cases of reservists who were discriminated against by employers, but couldn't prove it because the employer used another excuse to fire/layoff the employee. I am also 15 spots ahead of a guy who missed the test I took to get hired because he got activated out of the IRR and I didn't in 1991.
