Industrial fire lights up Winnipeg sky

Winnipeg Free Press October 23, 2009 4:02 AM

WINNIPEG — A spectacular industrial fire lit up the night sky over Winnipeg’s east end Thursday night, filling the air for miles around with possibly toxic smoke.

Explosions could also be heard coming from the fire with flames that formed a solid wall 20 metres high in the East Elmwood neighbourhood.

The fire started about 7:30 p.m. at a roofing supplies store in an industrial area.

The smoke had an industrial odour. Shingles contain oil and tar, which also makes them very flammable and long-burning.

Due to concerns with toxic smoke from burning shingles and explosions, police cleared a long stretch of nearby Nairn Avenue from just past the Nairn Overpass to Stapleton Street.

Police also evacuated stores and restaurants in the area.
