Study: Strangers with dogs rated as more trustworthy
By Richard Warnica, Canwest News Service October 28, 2009 1:14 AM
People are more likely to trust strangers accompanied by dogs, new research out of Edmonton shows.
The joint study by the University of Alberta and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology surveyed 295 people in Edmonton about their views on canines generally, and about breeds.
The researchers found 82 per cent of those surveyed were more willing to talk to a stranger if the stranger was with a dog. Sixty-six per cent of people, meanwhile, said they were more likely to trust someone with a dog than someone without.
But breeding also matters.
The researchers showed the participants pictures of four different dogs: a Doberman pinscher, a miniature pinscher, a Bernese mountain dog and a King Charles Cavalier spaniel.
When asked which dog they'd most like as a companion, the respondents overwhelmingly chose the Bernese, a fluffy, floppy-eared pooch that is almost cartoon-cute.
Only nine per cent of respondents picked each of the pinschers.

My next door neighbour has a Bernese, and he is a beautiful dog.
I also trust him. Coincidence?! Hmmmm...

My neighbors used to have a couple Rottweilers.Nicest dogs you'd ever want to meet.I trust the dogs more than I do some people.
The next door humans heard noises in their garage one night and called the law.
The cops wouldn't go near the place because "Rotto" was tangled up in his chain on the porch and they didn't think they could get by him.
As I led an officer into my backyard so he could shine his light on their garage,I explained that from fire department experience in clearing paths for patient transport,I learned that it wasn't when you saw a dog chained on a wrist thick chain feeding out of five gallon buckets in the backyard.
It was only when you saw the chain, chewed through collar, overturned buckets and no dog that you started worrying.
And on the way back,I made a detour through the fence into my neighbor's yard so I could pet "Rotto" and his sister. They loved the attention. All those folks come by and nobody came out to pet them.
"Yeah,good puppies.No one pays y'all any attention,do they?Leggo my leg,girl."

I think this answers the questions pretty convincingly
