Question Raton New Mexico Fire Department

I was invited to test and interview with The Raton Fire Department in Raton New Mexico. I have some concerns about the department though, I was told that they have a high turnover rate and that they are a very difficult department to work for. If somebody could shed some light on these issues I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

What about them do you perceive as "difficult". Question leaves nothing for anyone to go on.
Even the burger-flippers at McDonald's probably have some McWackers.

Management is making sure things are done right. Leadership is doing the right thing. The fire service needs alot more leaders and a lot less managers.

"Everyone goes home" is the mantra for the pussification of the modern, American fire service.

Comments made are my own. They do not represent the official position or opinion of the Fire Department or the City for which I am employed. In fact, they are normally exactly the opposite.

    Default difficult

I can't really clarify difficult because that is just what I was told so I have nothing to go on either. I'm trying to do as much research on the department as I can just to make sure that if I do go through with the process and possibly get offered a position that I'm not getting into a bad situation.

    Thanks

When I was trying to get on the job, it wouldn't have mattered to me which department I ended up on. Long as I was on the job and on a rig. If your not already on somewhere, take it. Even if it ends up being a hard department to work for, your still on the job. Hire there, then if you don't like keep taking test elsewhere.

If you have doubts that you would want to accept a position with this department, why did you apply in the first place?

    g. As I said in my first post I would be leary of getting into a dept that has a high turnover rate.

    Default Employment

If you are wondering why this particular FD has a high turnover rate, it could be one of the following:
    1. This particular FD could be a stepping stone to better positions in other
    larger FD's.
    2. This particular FD may be difficult to work for, due to some reasons
(politics, etc.) that cause a high turnover.

Is this particular FD union? If not, you can be thrown out the door with your lunch box and told never to come back. Without union representation, your
performance might not be "up to their expectations" and you could become unemployed.

What I have done when I went to interview at a career dept., was go to fire station and act like a person off the street. I did not tell them that I was going to interview and asked for a station tour. This allowed me to find out some things about the department, which would help me through the interview. If I found out the dept. was big into hazmat, I would highlight my hazmat training and experience more heavily.

One FD I was once a member of, was big into nepotism. If you did not belong or marry into a particular family, you did not go anywhere in that FD. Not saying if this is the case, but some smaller FD's have a tendency to do this.

Anyhow, taking a career position is a serious event in your fire service career. If you can somehow talk to members of that FD, former members of that FD or to nearby FD's and see that the "situation" is, so you know what is going on.

    Good luck in your endeavors!
