Thumbs up Times colonist - thank you letter

    Important lessons from tragic fire

By Henry Jablonski, Times Colonist November 18, 2009

On the evening of Nov. 11, I responded to a fire in one of our apartment units. One of our tenants heard the smoke alarm sounding within the apartment. By the grace of God, I was able to knock down the fire by using one of the building's fire extinguishers. Following that, I made the 9-1-1 emergency call for help. By the time I made it out of the smoke-filled hall and out the front entry into fresh air, the fire department had already arrived in full force. Ambulances and police followed shortly thereafter.

I want to thank every person who was involved in that tragic event: The fire department, paramedics, police, hospital staff. They go on shift and face the trauma of life-and-death situations every day. I only endured a few short -- though very intense minutes -- of what these people face daily. In my opinion, they are the quiet heroes. God bless them all.

I also want to emphasize how critical the smoke alarm and fire extinguisher were in saving lives and property. Without them, the situation would have been far, far worse. Every home should have both. Test the alarm regularly and make sure the battery gets replaced annually. And check to see that the extinguisher is charged.

It's a great investment against death and destruction. Believe me, I know all too well.

It's not that often that someone is appreciative.

    Very nice.

Now if only everyone had that same appreciation maybe our budgets wouldn't be cut and therefore safety and service levels would not go down.

Didn't you read the letter? All we have to do is require everyone to have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, then we won't need the fire department at all....

"I have a dream. It's not a big dream, it's just a little dream. My dream and I hope you don't find this too crazy is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."

Nice. Here's what we see in the paper every day:

" I've never seen a basement the FD hasn't saved. Masters pool builders and big screen TV experts for sure. Not to mention FD stickers in rear pickup window and cool FD sweatshirts.

At least Police earn their pay. Those guys go call to call. The last report a firefighter wrote was their GED thesis. "

I think it's a wonderful letter, but I have to ask:

What's a colonist? Do they perform a tonsilrectomy?

There are too many policymakers in this country who would say that with a straight face!

This is the kind of crap we see here.

They gripe and moan, but when the feces hits the oscillating blades who do they call to pull their butt out of the sling.
