Baby in car seat survives crash that kills four
By Jason van Rassel, Calgary Herald November 22, 2009
CALGARY — A six-month-old baby strapped into a car seat is the lone survivor of a head-on crash that killed four women near Nanton, Alta., early Saturday afternoon.
The RCMP said the baby was a passenger in a car driven by a woman headed south on Highway 2 when a northbound vehicle carrying three other women crossed the median and slammed into it shortly after noon.
"We had a car headed northbound and as it came around the corner, it lost control," said Cpl. A.J. Mand of the RCMP in Nanton, 70 kilometres south of Calgary.
The four women died at the scene. RCMP said late Saturday that the three women in the car that crossed the median were in their early 20s.
Authorities have not released names of the victims pending notification of next of kin.
The baby, whose gender weren't disclosed, was transported to a Calgary hospital by air ambulance. Police say the child sustained minor injuries and is doing well.
Police have not yet determined why the northbound vehicle crossed the median. They say speed and alcohol are not involved in the crash.
The stretch of Highway 2 where the collision happened is flat, recently re-paved and has a gentle curve just south of the crash scene.
Although police were only in the early stages of their investigation, Mand said conditions didn't immediately appear to be a factor in the collision
"The weather, the road — everything is good so far," he said.
Debris from both vehicles littered the far side of the south lanes, making it appear the collision happened as the southbound car travelled in the curb lane.
Both cars ended up in the ditch on the west side of the highway.
"They're both very, very damaged," Mand said.
The northbound car — an older-model blue sedan — "is almost in two," said Mand.
The RCMP closed the southbound lanes for several hours while investigators examined the scene and interviewed witnesses.
"We have people going in both directions who witnessed the crash," said Mand.
