Thumbs up Sprinklers extinguish Langford condo fire

    EGADS! Say it isn't so!

    Sprinklers extinguish Langford condo fire

Water damage displaces several tenants of four-storey building

    Times Colonist November 22, 2009

The sprinkler system in a Langford condo extinguished flames Sunday afternoon before fire crews arrived, but residual water damage displaced several other tenants in the four-storey building.

Smoke was escaping from a second-floor suite when Langford fire arrived at 866 Brock Ave. shortly after 1:30 p.m.

Once inside, it was clear the sprinkler system had kept the fire under control and extinguished the flames, according to Lt. Ryan Hyland.

Although several other tenants in the building were displaced by water damage, Hyland stressed the fire could have caused a lot more damage if not for the sprinklers.

The tenant in the unit where the fire happened was not home at the time. No injuries were reported.

The kitchen sustained the most damage, but Hyland said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

No damage estimate was available Sunday night.

    Not much of a surprise.

They work well in excess of 98% of the time.

I'm sure someone somewhere is complaining that the water messed their stuff up.
Even the burger-flippers at McDonald's probably have some McWackers.

Sprinklers keep condo fires at bay

Text By Edward Hill - Goldstream News Gazette

    Published: November 24, 2009 1:00 PM

0 Comments An elderly man suffered minor burns after fire broke out in his room at the Jeskin Aeire assisted living building on Goldstream Avenue.

Langford Fire Rescue evacuated 63 people from the building, with many having to be carried down stairwells around 1 p.m, on Nov. 21.

Staff from BC Ambulance and West Shore RCMP helped care for the residents. BC Transit donated a bus to shelter people while they waited for three hours, said fire Chief Bob Beckett.

“Folks came with food and drinks and helped keep the people entertained. It was a fairly elaborate, large incident,” Beckett said. “A lot of resources were there and they worked well together.”

The automatic sprinkler system kept the fire to a minimum, which repeated itself in a another apartment fire the next day. ??

Sunday at about 1:30 p.m., fire broke out in the kitchen of a condo at 866 Brock Ave. The occupant’s cat and dog were saved by the sprinkler system, Beckett said.

In both cases, neighbouring apartments were water damaged, but Beckett said damage would have been much worse without fire suppression.

“Both buildings had modern fire technology that did what it was designed to do,” he said. “Both fires were extinguished before they could take hold.”
