Default Does equipment purchased thru AFG have to meet nfpa standards

I have been asked if equipment purchased thru AFG has to be NFPA compliant. I said yes but can someone verify or tell me if I have it wrong?

If you quote an NFPA code, yes. Most all safety equipment has to be. For items like personal lights or webharness, not too sure. doubtful. But so much of what the AFG is geared at is equipment that is difficult to purchase on a department budget. That equipment is usually retail plus because it is NFPA approved.

Trucks, I would say 100% must be NFPA compliant to the class that they are in. This is one of the major goals of the vehicle portion of the grant is to replace trucks that are safety hazards, or home made or conversions. I would also say that the TICs must be complaint as well. The gurus can give you a definate on it though.

Vehicles : most definatly , stated in the PG.
I don't think you can purchase a thermal imaging camera that won't meet nfpa requirements for ILDH atmospheres. I might be wrong!

Good question, and why would anyone purchase equipment that wasnt? Sometimes the requirements are stretched out there, but it is for ff safety, etc.

DHS has been adopting NFPA as the current code governing emergency responses and readiness ever since 9/11. Basically all federal money can only be spent on NFPA compliant equipment to the current standard. For grants since there is a delay between application period and award/purchase we're held to the current NFPA code in place at the time of application. That's why with 2007 AFG awards one could still buy 2002 edition packs with the grant funds. NFPA 1982 wasn't in place until August 2007 so we got the grace period out of it. With the exception being the 2007 excess fund awards that were well after that point.

They are, thanks for asking. Fun to watch the differences between the kids. Daughter was in the 20th percentile for growth so they thought we weren't feeding her enough. Boy is 95th percent on height and weight. Starting to think maybe lineman instead of linebacker.

My recollection is the thermal imager is still a proposal. Not adopted.

The effort to "standardize" controls and such is likely kill the ongoing innovations that have been occuring in the area (like most electronics).

I sure hope FEMA does not see the 2k thermal imager that Sears sells then!
