    Default London Firefighter

    Hi All,

I'm a firefighter in London, England.
I'm looking to move over to the U.S, canada or Oz.
Do you know if I can transfer over as I'd like to stay as a firefighter ??
    Stay safe

Every career dept. here that I know of requires that you take and pass a civil service exam before getting hired and in that your chances are probably just as good as anyone elses, so long as you meet any necessary citizenship requirements.

Some smaller combination departments do hire without testing but that is unusual (at least here in the Northeast) and when done those slots are usually reserved for those who currently serve as a volunteer with the department.

There is the option of becoming a volunteer FF here in the U.S. depending on if they have VFDs where you move to. Most departments are always looking for members so there is a good shot at that option.

A direct transfer is not likely here as you do things quite differently across the pond and would need retraining in our operations. Most cities have established hiring lists already in effect as well which can't be circumvented due to legal constraints.

    Good luck

I'm going to have to agree with Cogs, Anna. As long as you meet requirements for citizenship you should be able to get a job. You will have to get certifications that meet local requirements though. That will all depend on what state you live in.

Are you a paid, career member? If you are why do you want to leave?
