Two infants dropped, safely caught in Edmonton condo fire
Canwest News Service January 7, 2010 1:09 AM
Canwest News Service, Two infants were dropped off balconies early yesterday and caught safely during a fire at an Edmonton condo complex.
Vanessa Machiskinic had been awake a few minutes when she heard the scream of smoke alarms. The pregnant 24-year-old grabbed her infant son, Jet Nguyen, from his crib and ran into the smoky hallway.
Frightened and confused neighbours lined the hallways, staring at the thick black smoke billowing from the stairwells that blocked their escape. Panicked, Machiskinic ran back into her apartment, grabbed a chair and started smashing the window.
Once the window was broken, Machiskinic's boyfriend, Adrian Key, 23, held 21-month-old Jet -- who was wearing only a diaper -- out over the railing of the second-storey balcony in the frigid -20 C morning air.
Below was building resident Dan Marianchuk, 46. When he saw Key and the baby, he ran over and positioned himself underneath.
Key dropped the boy. Jet landed safely in Marianchuk's waiting arms.
Moments earlier, Marianchuk rescued another child from a lower balcony.
He said he heard glass breaking, and ran over to see Jerry Sooknarine, 35, kicking out the sliding door on his balcony. Sooknarine dropped his 30-month-old son, Michael, just under a metre to the waiting Marianchuk.
