A lot of DOD Federal Fire Departments have GS-8 Lead Firefighters! The Department may call them a Captain to be in line with there city counter parts but they are still a Lead Firefighter.
Drivers are or should be GS-7's . What is funny about the Driver GS-7 position is that the Air Force believes it is a Lieutenant Position when compared to City counter parts a Lieutenant is a Company Officer like a Captain.
Before the YN pay schedule started captains were GS-9, and Lt. were GS-7 just like firefighters. The certs required for lead firefighter is the same as our Lt position. From what I've read its a it's a non supervisory position. I was wondering if any departments had both captains and gs-8 lead firefighters on the same company?
We have GS-7 FF/EMT's, GS-7 Lt's(Driver), GS-8 Captain's, and GS-9 FF/Medic's. Lt's get the short end having to move over a seat and do more work when the Capt is off. They do not get paid more.
Should be 7 FF, 8 LT, 9 Capt, 9 Medic(due to training)
That what is was trying to find out. Before NSPS our pay structure was GS-7 FF/EMT's, GS-7 Lt's(Driver), GS-9 FF/EMT-P, GS-9 Capt. & GS-10 Capt/EMT-P supervisors. It just doesn't make sense to give extra money to Capt "Paramedic Supervisors" & to leave the drivers the same. When that's your biggest jump in responsibly.
Does any one know it AFGE is working on reclassification for Drivers?
keep in mind, OPM's classification system works off of certifications. there is no such thing as a GS-07 "DRIVER". A GS-07 is either a Hazmat Tech, BLS, or Hazmat Tech/BLS. You get paid at a GS-06 for hazmat operations, GS-07 for hazmat tech/bls, GS-08 lead firefighter, GS-09 firefighter/paramedic, GS-10 supervisory firefighter, etc etc.
a GS-08 lead firefighter is NOT a supervisory position, and it won't be annotated as so in your personnel records. some bases have GS-06 firefighter, then GS-07 'drivers', but you do not get paid to be a driver, you get paid to be a hazmat tech or emt-b. that's how they justify the steps from gs-04/05/06/07 firefighters... based off of certifications and qualifications.
