Default How many times a year does your department make the staff take to CPAT?

I'm wondering since on our department we have to take it twice a year and you have to complete the course in 9 minutes or less. This is for paid FT, PT and volly members.

We are FT paid and we're just implementing a "job skills test" annually, which is pretty much the CPAT test, just a different layout. The training division is going establish a reasonable maximum time and if someone doesn't make it, they'll go on a "training program." There's talk of temporary light duty or a medical examination if they don't make it too, but that's not confirmed yet.

We are a paid FT department. Although we have recently purchased the CPAT equipment we will not use it as an annual test. In fact I thought part of the license agreement was that you would not use it on incumbent personnel. Maybe it just said the test could not be punitive.

Anyway we do have an annual "fit for duty" test that is much like the combat challenge. Our entire department has to attempt the test but only guys hired after a certain date have to finish it in a certain time or face possible punitive action. The rest have been grandfathered in.

Thumbs down From the IAFF website

    http://www.iaff.org/HS/Well/CPATLicensestory.htm

"This agreement states that the licensee may only use the CPAT in its entirety, and it explicitly prohibits use of the CPAT to test incumbent members of a fire department."

I need to add this for clarification purposes. We do not use the actual CPAT since we lack pretty much all the equipment except for the stairstepper. We use a "modified" version where we have 9 minutes to complete the course while wearing an air pack, helmet, and gloves. The premise of taking it twice a year according to the Captain is to "test" yourself and if you can't pass it the first time you have 6 months to get in shape and pass it the second time. If you don't then you potentially will be let go because you cannot meet the department health and weight standard.

So does anyone see this as a valid reason to do this test every six months?

So if you fail the test you could be let go right away? Can you elaborate a little on how this works at your department.

At my department all personnel must go through our annual test but only those hired within the last 3 years face punitive action. If they fail they have 1 year to pass the test before they could be fired. During that time they have the option of being set up with an individualized workout plan by a Peer Fitness Trainer (actually they have this option at any time) and are allowed to challenge the test once per quarter (3 months).

    NOPE

We do have an annual doctor physical, but even that if you do not pass there is no action

should a cpat test be done????

cops have to shoot straight once a year here, and if they do not they cannot use thier gun, but I do not know what happens from there.

seems as long as you can do the job, should be good.

    FFRock

is there anythinig in writing on this????

and if so how long as it been policy????
