I am going down for my cpat in late March and I'm wondering if the mentoring sessions are helpful . I can only make it to one session before my practice runs. Should I just do the practice runs or is it worth it to drive from PA for one session of mentoring? Will they walk me through the course?

They will offer advice, Listen, they will give you a chance to try some of the equipment out, or do a practice run of "some" of the events. - Do them when you have the chance.
Then make sure you customize your training to what you do on the course.Troutville Volunteer Fire Department

Did the CPAT, interview, and polygraph this weekend. It seemed to really go well, and they said they would like to schedule me for physical and psych. After the interview, they said the area is really short medics, and they are a hot commodity. Is this true? I know it's been talked about before, but in the midwest everyone has a medic license.
Anyway, I was suprised to see how big the department is, as well. Seems like a great group of guys I met. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but it's been tough out here lately.
