Working thru issues with our Minitor V’s .
We have had several pagers ( +- 10) across our department that experience the same problem .
Pager opens up as expected but only receives the dispatcher’s voice for about 1-2 seconds and then resets. We have looked at all the settings and all seems ok – pagers are set to be open for the length of the transmission +3 seconds. This does not seem to be location driven as we can have a room full of pagers and some work fine others experience this issue. We have sent them into Motorola – they come back showing “ SWAP UNIT” - we think this means it’s a different unit not necessary a new unit – and then sometimes the swapped unit has the same issue so it get sent in again
As a side note other departments in our county are having the same issue.
Thoughts – most tones are two tones with only a long tone for mutual aid.

Are you in an area where the signal from your paging tower is somewhat weak? I'm wondering if the squelch is set high enough on the pagers and the signal is weak enough that the signal actually drops out momentarily, which then activates the 3 second reset timer. The signal only needs to drop out for a very small amount of time to trigger the 3 second timer. This could be why some pagers in the same room act up and some don't...it would just depend on whether the signal to that particular pager happened to fade out momentarily. Not sure if this is what's actually happening, just a thought.

Typically signal strength is very strong – line of sight to the tower in many places that have been an issue – Assistant Chiefs house 2 miles from the tower. We have no point in the district more than 5 miles from the paging tower. 96 watts radio output 44 actual after filtering and combining at 280 feet

It may be a sertings issue....what are your settings?
Voice storage to "dynamic" with a timeout of 20 seconds works well for us.
This value sets the pager to reset when it detects open carrier after 19.88 seconds (what it sets itself to if you enter 20) or anytime after that point when the trsnsmission stops. If the dispatcher transmits for 23 seconds continuously the pager will record for 23 seconds and reset the voice storage when a carrier is detected. If the dispatcher transmists for 16 seconds, the pager will continue to record open carrier for another 3.88 seconds until the reset timer closes.
Set your pagers for dynamic reset with a "N" value that assures your typical transmission will be recorded. You can opt for "delayed N" for a delayed reset to close the pager once the call is recorded or "revert N" to leave the pager open for a manual reset after the N value or transmission expires and recording stops.
If this is confusing, shoot me an email mg0178@yahoo.com and I will try to help more

We had tons of trouble with Minitor 5. It seems Motorola is making junk now that that moved oepartions to Mexico.
Trying out the Swissphone now, seems to be much more reliable.
