I just wanted to say whats up? I'm very new to the fire service and I just started my FF1 Class. Already my teachers have pegged me as someone who can really go somewhere. The thing is I really want to become a full-time paid firefighter. So I'm wondering does anyone have any advice for me? What type of workouts should I do for fitness? What else should I do to make a company want to pay me. Right now I'm in a non-paid department.
-Thanks Dave

well to answer your question crow... I've spent almost all 19 years wanting to do something important with my life. And to tell you the truth I've only felt like I have a purpose when I'm helping other people. I know I have the physical traits, and ever since I was voted in I've worked my *** off and I've really thought about this. My father was a firefighter, and my grandfather served in WW2. My brother is an electrical engineer for a low level military defense company. I've talked to alot of people and I just can't see myself working in an office. I want this, and I'm willing to go anywhere and do anything to become apart of something bigger than myself. And there's nothing better than helping people.

I am now a past chief and the views, opinions, and comments are mine and mine alone. I do not speak for any department or in any official capacity. Although, they would be smart to listen to me.

Here's some advice: "Learn to LOVE EMS." Attain your EMT-Basic and keep moving up to Medic.
Alot of fire services run EMS, so it's getting increasingly difficult (not impossible) to find somewhere that is strictly fire.
Otherwise, it seems you have a fine attitude and ambition (which can be good, but couple it with humility, otherwise you'll have problems). Keep up your studies and above all else:
DON'T GIVE UP!!!
Take care bro.
