    Default Its just a manhole....

BOOM! Flames erupt from an underground transformer and lick the facade of 645 Sixth Ave. at West 20th Street yesterday. Miraculously, no one was hurt.

The smoke kept up for about 20 minutes before the fire erupted, people in the building said.

A spectacular eight-story fireball erupted from an underground Con Ed transformer in Chelsea yesterday, blowing out windows as it scorched a building on Sixth Avenue.

"I could feel the heat on my face from across the street. It was thick, black smoke -- it looked like an explosion from the movies," said Austin Riggs, 27, who snapped this amazing photo of the blast with his cellphone camera.

No one was hurt in the 10:45 a.m. incident at 645 Sixth Ave. at the corner of West 20th Street.

Workers in a ground-floor Radio Shack -- who said Con Ed had been working on the transformer on Monday -- called 911 when they experienced a building-shaking explosion and then saw smoke coming from a manhole.

"The room filled with smoke. I thought somebody caught something on fire in class," said Aaron Paternoster, 25, who was practicing welding in an Apex Technical School classroom on one of the building's upper floors.

The cause of the blast was still undetermined last night.

    Default Manhole?

Surely in this PC crazy world it should be "Personhole?"

Gee...and people looked at me like I was crazy when I told them they shouldn't walk right past a smoking manhole cover in downtown Albany last year.....just before the cover blew off!.....will have to pull up the pictures from work and post them - nothing near as spectacular at the picture above though!

As you know these this are not uncommon, but when even a flee farts in certain neighborhoods in The City....it makes the news.

must be universal problem. a block in a rough neighborhood could burn down, and if it makes the news only get a 10 second mention. Someone burns popcorn in one of the rich suburbs and the news reports talks about a "family escapes fire" and you hear the wife talking about how scared she was.

its kinda the opposite here, only because the news stations are centralized near the rough areas and they cant get footage of the big stuff unless the photo unit or bystander gets some before we put it out

    Probably right after Patterson flushed.....

Not a problem around this area. I think there may be a total of 5 manhole covers in the entire town, and they are for sewers...

Well it's a easy fire to put out just put the LID back on! HAHAHA Sorry had to say it. I'm sure at times is can become a very big problem. We don;'t have any manhole covers in my district on pot holes that would swallow a pumper lol

LOL...good idea except it doesn't work! Those flames in my 1st pic were BERFORE the lid blew off!.....That is why I was parked on a side street, NOT over any manholes, and kept my distance.....unlike the idiots who still wanted to cross the street right next to the thing.

Oh - and this was uphill from the Capitol.....so maybe it was the other State workers flushing...lol.....
