yes, what onebugle just said. each day we work on the application we intend to submit for 2010. then we are assigned group numbers. group one exchanges their narratives with group 3 one day and group 4 the next and so forth. We attempt to grade each narrative we read in four categories. Score 0-100 and average out the numbers. I read maybe 5 different narratives yesterday and will read around 4-5 today and score them. Then our group gets our reviewed and graded narratives back for each of us to go over.

Remember, you have to have a thick skin when this is going on. it is not personal. amazing how some score you high and some others score you low. the trick is to get some of the real gurus like sly, erin, dusty and jeff lebeda to review your narrative and pay close attention to what they say. I decided to change my request from a used tanker to a new tanker about 30 minutes ago.

anyway this happens everyday. the other benefit is the discussions in person like what happens here on Firehouse. A lot to learn. Some like Kurt stress cost benefit formulas, some do not. To say it is interesting is an understatement.
As Sly, who has been a reviewer explained, the worse narrative he reads here is 100 times better than what he often sees in the actual peer review.
That's why we miss Onebugle, Catch and others of that caliber. They would effectively double the knowledge being passed around. Especially when they get in discussions with each other. makes you want to have a audio recorder with you.

I'm also looking for a winning narrative for a tanker for this years grant. Need to replace a 1977 homemade one. Thanks!

Sounds like a good narrative, any chance I could get a copy so I can improve my chances. My don't look good for this year, haven't seen any signs of a award.
