zarack808, I hope you dont plan on working for this 'Laughing stock" because with that attitude you wont last long. BTW i have talked to firefighters in many cities and the Cleveland Fire Department is well respected around the U.S.

I have to agree. Cleveland Fire is well respected...now on to the merger

Cleveland EMS is set to hire a class of 40 to prepare for the merger. They will be looking for Paramedics that are also 240-hr firefighter in order to prepare for the merger. This is straight from multiple CEMS guys that I deal with everyday. They believe that a lot of the CFD guys will "jump ship" and retire once this merger gets fully set in. It will be messy believe that but it sounds like if you want to run EMS for a bit and then get fire. I'm holding out for a "smaller" suburban dept outside Cleveland City Limits

Are you saying that the City is going to hire the EMS people in an effort to bypass the current firefighter eligibility list?

Eh I don't know if it's the city's doing I think it's more Ekhert's doing and trying to get "ahead" of Cleveland Fire.

I'll go ahead and say it's the City, since Eckart (or Carlton) can't do any hiring without the blessing of Safety Director Flask, who oversees police, fire, and ems operations. Also, Eckart is no longer the EMS Commissioner. My understanding is that he now reports directly to Flask as the Assistant Safety Director, in charge of overseeing the merger. And again, Eckart can't make any unilateral personnel decisions that aren't first blessed by Flask and budgeted for by City Hall. So if the city/Eckart is beefing up EMS personnel, its not in an attempt to get "ahead" of Fire, since Flask is in charge of it all. Director Flask and City Hall must be complicit in any decision concerning the hiring of public safety personnel - especially in light of the current budget crunch.

With that said, it is very possible that Eckart & Flask might be using this EMS hire to supplant that firefighter eligibility list. However, we'll see how this all shakes out eventually.

Thats exactly it, we just have to wait it out and see. EMS can continue to hire, and hire with 240 preference all they want, but even though the city has a blue print on how they want the merger to occur we won't see any merger movement until the unions can come to an agreement on how certain things will interoperate. Local93 seems to have a very strong stance that any EMS members will take an open competitive exam just like the one administered in 2010. Thats not to say they won't get bonus points on an exam, but they should need to take an *open* exam. I haven't looked for myself but apparently the Ohio Revised Code is very specific in the way the firefighters are hired and the open exam is included.

There are a lot of rumors in the firehouses, but anyone i've spoken to (that I can consider to be "in the know") has been fairly confident there will be a class off the list. Maybe not the massive amounts that were originally expected but at least a class. They have 100 names certified for hire, don't be surprised if the city were to issue conditional letters of employment like they did on the last class so they can hire after the expiration of the list. They don't want to waste an exam and not get any people off of it.

Lately, it seems that all the media and news reports concerning Cleveland Fire Dept have been very negative and unflattering to say the least. But what's the latest talk regarding hiring or activity on the current list? To my understanding, nearly all the guys that were laid off have been brought back except for maybe 2.

Kinda depressing that the union or its members have not done more to step up for their reputation. They get paid 10's of thousands less than Columbus or Cincinnati, work with crap equipment, crap firehouses, consistently disrespected by their own city...

The local media and the area's largest paper, The Plain Dealer, were big supporters of Issue 2 and have made it very clear they are anti-labor. The paper has something negative about the CFD almost everyday as the leading headline of the paper. The union tries their best to get their message out but the local media chooses not to air or print their statements. It is unfortunate what the CFD firefighters make. They work hard and go to many fires. But all you have to do is take a drive through the city and you can see what kind of dump it is. Hopefully the casino and other new construction taking place downtown will bring in much needed revenue.

The remaining 15 laid off firefighters will be recalled to duty on Monday, July 9th. The initial expectation was that everyone wouldn't be called back until the end of 2012. So, this is great news for the department and perhaps a good sign for those waiting to get called up to academy. Maybe this means that the City will move more quickly than expected with hiring.

Dude, I heard that the city will be giving another test some time next year. The current list expires in January anyway. Looks like they may just start from scratch.

I want to correct a misstatement I made in my previous post. I incorrectly stated that all 15 firefighters who were still laid off were recalled on Monday. Actually, only 9 of them were recalled and there are still 5 or 6 others still waiting to be called back. From what i was told, everyone should be back on by early September.

@mdd2121: That's encouraging news. What did you hear exactly regarding a potential academy in 2013? Any info on when (spring, summer)? How many people?

Can't speak for what anyone else was told, but I heard talk that an academy class is being planned for early spring. Once the city calls back the remaining few guys still on layoff, they will get the ball rolling again on processing the list. That's what I heard from a couple guys in the department.

This thread has been quiet (no surprise), but just checking in to find out if anyone close to the department has an update on recruitment info. Have all the firefighters returned from layoff yet?

Yep, all the firefighters are back to work, as reported by IAFF Local 93. http://iafflocal93.org/

Good news for the city and the department. Now we just have to wait and see if they will resume processing the list for a 2013 academy. They better get going relatively soon because the current list expires in January.

Its all true. They are looking to pluck people off the current list. At least 50-70 people are going to be contacted for future classes. The current list is going to be out of date soon, so they are looking for recruitment and DROP members are going to be leaving in droves. When are they going to do another test? Haven't heard anything about that.

Finally, things are starting to move along. To everyone who is moving forward with background checks, etc... good luck! It seemed like a good group of guys at the fingerprinting session.
