    Default What is leadership?

    How would you define 'leadership'? What does it mean to you? How do you achieve it? What does it take to be a 'leader'? Be it a word, a couple words, a phrase, or a paragraph, how would you define something that is so important, but at times seems to be in short supply? Thanks for your input!

    i think a leader is some one who can get people to never give up, a good leader can have people willing to go to hell and back with them. they care and understand the ones under them. finaly they are also willing to do anything for their followers
    Firefighters need not fear fire, but give it all their respect.

    A leader must LEAD by Example and serve those he/she commands.

    A leader must exercise good judgment and not let personal issues cloud his/her judgment.

    A leader must set a standard of conduct for him/her-self and those within the command.

    A leader should set an example for others to follow.

    A leader must be fair, possess compassion and understanding, and never let anger control emotions.

    A leader must be a mentor, have patience and persuade those around him/her to become the best they can be.

    A true leader does not really have to lead... he just has to point the way and his troops will gladly slay the dragon.

    Your right on top of it as usual.

    nfd, your additions fit perfectly.

    I know this is a little late for a response, but our department has had leadership issues for quite awhile now. I have tried to work from the sidelines to strengthen my officers. to get them to take an active approach to leadership. So waiting for them to stand up and actually lead. I am coming to the end of my participation and the fire service the last 6 years is looking to weed out complacent and non compliant departments. Funding is getting harder to come by. Training, politics, funding and leadership and the proper balance between them and when to use them are what I have tried to show them. Along with a few other inside maneuvers with the hope that my young officers grasp what is at stake.

    As they may undestand the theory, in practical and acutal application, they will discover is harder.

    So the above list of leadership points PK and nfd listed, are spot on.

    So I may only be 17, but I have had a lot of leadership experience (more than you could guess) so I'll put my 2 cents in.

    First, read my signature at the bottom of this post, because those two quotes truly describe leadership.

    A leader is someone who:
    1. Never stops looking for self improvement, because your subordinates can only be as motivated and knowledgeable as you are.
    2. Is technically and tactically proficient.
    3. Knows their subordinates and truly looks out for their welfare.
    4. Keeps their subordinates informed.
    5. Ensures that tasks are understood, supervised, and accomplished.
    6. Trains their subordinates as a team. ALL THE TIME.
    7. Makes sound and timely decisions.
    8. Develops a sense of responsibilities among their subordinates.
    9. Doesn't micro-manage.
    10. Employs their command in accordance with their capabilities.
    11. Seeks more responsibility, and takes responsibility for their actions.

    Leaders have 14 leadership traits:
    Judgement
    Justice
    Dependability
    Initiative
    Decisiveness
    Tact
    Integrity
    Endurance
    Bearing
    Unselfishness
    Courage
    Knowledge
    Loyalty
    Enthusiasm

    A leader will never make their subordinates do something that they wouldn't do themselves. So this leads me to the most important part:

    LEAD BY EXAMPLE

    Yes, I plan on starting out on a few local departments and move up from there.

    Leaders are born not made --- wait let me rephrase that --- TRUE leaders are born not made. All of these "nuggets" can help a true leader refine his skills - but all the fancy quotes in the world wont make you a leader.
