    Angry THIS is COLD

Heartless thieves fleece stricken senior just an hour before her death

By Matthew Coutts, National Post March 18, 2010 6:02 AM

TORONTO — An elderly woman on the verge of death had $7,000 worth of jewelry stolen from her Tuesday night, police said Wednesday as they appealed for information on two male suspects.

The two men allegedly stole the jewelry from the palliative care unit of Toronto East General Hospital, when the dying woman's family briefly left the room.

"The family was there visiting the victim for a vigil. She was expected to pass away," said Det.-Const. Nora Blackmore.

They stepped out of the room for about 10 minutes, and when they returned, the contents of the room had been moved.

"Her purse was on the table beside her. That's not where the family had left it," Blackmore said.

The woman passed away less than an hour later.

Police allege the two men entered the hospital shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday and began going floor to floor, looking for a quick score.

When the suspects entered her room, the woman was unconscious.

The family called security, who contacted police. But when they arrived less than an hour later, she had died.

Surveillance footage of two suspects has been released to the public.

The suspects are described as white, between 20 and 30 years of age. One has short, dark-brown hair and was wearing blue jeans, a black leather jacket, striped shirt and white running shoes. The other has a shaved head and was wearing a fedora-style hat and a dark jacket.

Blackmore said the family was obviously upset.

Caught a piece of the news last night, and apparently they arrested one of the two, and are hunting for the second.

Arrest made after dying woman robbed of $7,000 in jewelry in hospital

By Matthew Coutts, National Post March 18, 2010 Comments (68)

TORONTO — Toronto police arrested one of two men accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from an elderly hospital patient less than an hour before her death, and said Thursday they were closing in on the outstanding suspect.

Isaac Lewkowicz, 29, was arrested late Wednesday night after he and another man allegedly entered Toronto East General Hospital Tuesday evening, went to the palliative care unit on the fifth floor and stole $7,000 worth of jewelry from a woman in her 70s, as she lay unconscious and alone in her hospital room.

Her family had been by her side just moments earlier, but stepped out to get coffee. An hour after the incident, the woman had passed away.

The suspect was arrested shortly after hospital surveillance photos of two men walking down a hallway were released to the public.

Rocky Prosser, the hospital's manager of protection services, said Thursday that after watching the footage with a "fine-tooth comb," he thinks the two men had the heist planned, and knew where to go to find defenceless targets.

"I feel they probably had some previous knowledge of where they were going to go. The reason for it is because they are a vulnerable population and easy targets (in the palliative care unit)," Prosser said. "We feel these individuals are people who purposely have done this. Probably they have done it before."

"You have a floor of people that are sick, that are on their last days, maybe weeks, and the families are not worried about other people trying to do these type of crimes. Everybody is focusing on their emotions and comfort," Prosser said.

He added that in his 20 years working in health care, he has never seen such a despicable act.

"What kind of person goes into a place of healing and commits a crime against vulnerable people who are sick and who are dying? It is beyond my comprehension."

Lewkowicz has been charged with theft over $5,000, theft under $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of heroin, possession of marijuana and four counts of failing to comply with probation.

Marcos Marinoni, 26, is wanted for conspiracy to commit indictable offence and theft over $5,000. He is described as white, five foot four, with black hair and brown eyes.

There's just nothing they can say that can excuse this.
Hopefully, they'll tell the one they have that they've already caught his friend who's been saying that it was all HIS idea.
And on that bare room?Tell them that if they get out of it with those JSTF types blocking the door, the charges will be dropped.
Then lock the door from the outside and turn off the lights.

Those lads come back a bit stressded and over revved. I rather doubt they'd get within 3 feet of that door, lights on or off. Mind you arterial projection can reach several feet.
