You will, sometime before or during your 240 class, need to take NIMS 700 and 200 (depending on the state you may need to take different ones). You can take these classes at https://training.fema.gov/IS/NIMS.asp The certs never expire, and they are semi-easy.

Yes they are useful. My department requires that all members complete 100, 200, and I think one more. There easy but time consuming. Goodluck!

In most situations, firefighters are required to complete Certification in IS700, IS100 and IS200.

It would be a good idea to get these out of the way now. More are likely to come down down the pike in the future.

Mid-Level Officers (LT, Capt) need IS300 and Command Officers must have IS400 and IS800b.

Beginning April 1, 2010, Communication Personnel, PIOs and Command Officers must have IS701, IS702, IS703 and IS704.

I would say everyone should take NIMS, because they can help your fire department certify for grants.

I had not heard that. Is it a Federal "recommendation" or something local? If it's from the feds can you point me to something official?

Looks like I might be taking more online classes. Awesome!

    Thanks!

Take them. They are easy. They will be useful in the future. They actually help show the command structure well.

NIMS (National Incident Managment System) was created to help responders be able to handle large scale incidents. My understanding is that alot of your fema grants and such are tied to having these classes, and that fire departments had to be NIMS compliant by having 100 200 700 and 800. There is also 300 and 400 which is more dealing with tatictal (Officers) and I know in my department due to change in the grants, that the top three officers of my department must have 300 and 400.

NIMS is a good concept and is very common throught fire depts in the U.S. Good learning tool.

I would never consider test compromise or cheating as that would violate my integrity, and the integrity of the fireservice.

    On that note

And yes, FF1 here now incorperates NIMS classes. I think everyone should have a base knowledge of the command system they operate under. Very good idea to do.

Sorry sometimes i forget that not everyone on here is from Ohio. In Ohio we have 3 different fire courses you can take: 36 hour course (for volunteers), 120 hour class aka firefighter I (for smaller, non-volunteer depts), and 240 hour class aka firefighter II (for career firefighters). My department (currently a combination paid/volunteer dept, but formerly just a volly dept) was the first volunteer dept in Ohio to require all members to be trained at the 240 level.
