    Default Gear donations

I have just recently joined our local volunteer fire department and am curious on where to start to get some gear. The turnout gear we have now is parts and pieces. We fight a lot of grass fires due to our 1500 sq mile county being mostly ranch land. We are in need of some lighter wild land gear. I appreciate any help the department can get with donations or information.

    Thanks

    Craig Wagner

Though your intentions are good in their intent, this is something that is better left to the Line Officers and/or Administration of your organization. There is a reason that many companies do not donate old gear- by the time they get done with it, it is just as old and ratty as yours is, and everyone fears lawsuits in today's litigious society.

Before you go any further with your endeavors, I would speak with your chain of command, and make sure that you have the blessings of your Organization.

We have received our current gear from Helping Hands, through the Texas forestry service. Which I cannot say enough things about this organization and it is greatly appreciated. I googled "free gear" and a post from this site came up. So I figured I would ask again because the gear that was on here had already been donated. I do understand that one might be scared of law suits in this politically incorrect world. We have about a dozen members and eight or so mix matched outfits. Thank you again for your help and the Chief said any and all donations would be greatly excepted.

If I understand correctly, "Helping Hands" no longer exists.

It sounds like you are in Texas. The Texas Forest Service has a grant program for getting new Wildland and Structural gear. You should look into that. It may not be the best gear on the market, but it does the same thing.

Ask your officers about writing an AFG grant application. Turnout gear is a high priority with AFG.
