Anyone ever use this? I need to replace some 5" LDH & Low Band Minitor 5 pagers. Think either one qualifies? If you have used it and were successful what did you get?

This grant is generally for rural/wildland equipment. Not sure if either of those items would qualify. I know in the past our department has gotten Indian Tanks and hose for wild land/brush fire use.

We've gotten the water backpacks, indian tanks (ugh, before the backpacks!) wildland hand tools (rakes, brooms, swatters, etc.)portable radios and a 'trash pump' that out-pumps our portable fire pump (and half the cost!)
A neighboring FD has gotten TOG, nozzles & attack hose, portable & mobile radios...
LDH and pagers might be a bit of a stretch... Remember, the total project allowed isn't really that high (they say to figure on a project normally not much more than $3,000.00 or so) if memory serves, around 4 - 5K is the top (so since it's 50% matching: 2 - 2500.00...)
But, if that is your highest priority items, then what do you have to loose? We're toying between a couple more portable radios or replacing the rest of the indian tanks with the backpacks (saves a lot of space!)

I figured it would be a strech but what can it hurt to try? Those are our highest priority right now. I'd ask for one or the other and keep total cost at $3000. Which do you think would score higher? As far as "wildland equipment" goes I think we are ok with what we got.

Contact your local forest ranger and he will be able to tell you what is available. I know some departments in our area have used it to purchase portable radios. As far as the award limit, it is a 50/50 match with a maximum award portion of $1,000 unless they changed it this year. You can always spend more but you will only get $1,000 from the state.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I contacted Lynne korona the program specialist in reguards to my question about 5" LDH and Pager eligibility. Her response was:
"There are no restrictions on the diameter or type of hose and communications equipment is eligible, including pagers."
I thought they were gonna be long shots on the eligibility list but I guess it's a go!

Doesn't mean they're not long shots, eligible and competitive are 2 different animals.

Only major eligibilty item in Iowa is you only get grant every other year. Max grant $3500. Handhelds/pagers are very very common. Max hose size is 1-3/4".

True. I probably should have rephrased that. I didn't think they were going to be eligible but it looks like they are. Even though they may not be competitive it's the best grant/item match I have right now as an attempt to get 5" or pagers. I'm saving AFG for the "no brainer" TIC.

NYS grants are $2000 max, includes $1000 match. We purchased 2-way programmable radios last year. No questions asked. $2000 might get you what, 4 pagers?

These grants are competitive as the AFG grants are. You accrue points based upon population under 10,000, native american tribal lands, and whether you were awarded one in the prvious year. When we got ours last year I spoke with the forest ranger and he didn't seem to care what we purchased and encouraged us to apply again.

Blitzfire portable monitor purchased
We bought a blitzfire portable monitor 2 years ago with NYSDEC grant. Everyone above is correct re: $1000 max award. Application is very straightforward and uncomplicated compared to AFG. Pretty easy actually! I believe this year NYS EnCon has $450,000 to grant so that is 450 departments at $1000 per grant. If you have not been funded in previous 5 years you get more points on application. Towns with population less than 10,000 also score higher. After being funded the local Forest Ranger came and verified equipment purchase and that closed out grant. Good luck.

In my experience these grants are not nearly as competitive as AFG grants. NY will only fund you every other year, but you can apply every year. We have been funded every other year for the last 10 years regardless of what we have asked for. According to our program contact they are more worried about spreading the money around and getting it to new and different areas than what they are funding.

We get the NY award every other year. But we now apply every year as the points for tha denied application count the next year. This year we got a 2000 gallon portable pond, some 3" suction hose and a new float strainer for the 3". In the past we have picked up fire rakes, fire line hoes, Indian tanks, and a couple "trash pumps" as well.
5" is not going to fall under the "small hose category"
N.Y. is a 1000 dollar grant with a 1000 dollar match from your department.

I found our award letter in my mailbox today and it was postmarked on the 30th. Second year in a row for us.
