It happened Saturday afternoon at Lockegee rock near Cave Run Lake. Crews told LEX18 he fell between 40-60 feet from the cliff.

Officials on the scene said several MSU students were there and assisted in the rescue.

"Without them, it would have been very difficult to get this guy out in a timely fashion,Those students should have been really proud of what they've done today."

The student was flown to UK Hospital.

The school's website said they offered counseling to students, and that neither alcohol or foul play is suspected.

A Morehead State student continues to fight for his life after falling nearly 80 feet.

Crews found and rescued Drew McKinney at Loc-Key-Gee Rock, a popular but remote hiking destination near Cave Run Lake in Rowan County. McKinney remains in critical condition at UK Hospital.

Friends and family say they hope the show of support he is getting online from Facebook will help his recovery. Since the Saturday afternoon accident, more than 800 people have joined a prayer group for McKinney. Friends say the student is responding and showing some improvement.

Student in serious condition after fall
By Rob Ginter - Staff Writer

March 30, 2010 — A Morehead State University student is in serious condition from injuries he suffered in a fall Saturday at Lockegee Rock.

MSU student Richard Andrew McKinney fell what fire officials say is 80 feet while hiking with friends and was unconscious.

“We were dispatched on Saturday afternoon at around 3:50 after the report that the subject had fallen off of Lockegee and there were units there in 10 minutes,” said Morehead Fire Department Assistant Chief John Northcutt. “Ambulance workers then had to walk in an additional 10 minutes to the site.

“He was unconscious and we called for a helicopter at the time that landed off of Highway 801,” Northcutt said. “Over 25 emergency workers helped carry him out of the woods,” Northcutt said. “Around 20 to 25 mostly MSU students assisted in carrying him out. It was a very remote and difficult location. He was then flown to the UK trauma center. His condition was critical when found by paramedics.”

Emergency workers responded to the scene from the MFD, Rowan County EMS, Farmers Fire Department, Rowan Rescue Squad, U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement and Kentucky State Police, Northcutt said.

Also responding to the scene were MSU officials, Northcutt said.

“MSU Vice President for Student Life Madonna Weathers and Dean Kevin Koett were at the scene after being notified and were very helpful. They were able to get in contact with the subject’s parents and were helpful in providing information about the patient,” Northcutt said.

The student was transported (via helicopter) to the University of Kentucky Trauma Center and is listed in serious condition.

"We are reaching out to those affected,” said Weathers.

MSU has offered counseling to students.

According to MSU officials, neither alcohol nor foul play is suspected. The accident remains under investigation.
