For 2010 I'm planning on addressing the need for guys to get to FF-1. What items should be included in the request? I assume to include the cost of the test, but what other learning items could I include such as text books, projector, dry erase boards etc?
Any help or suggestions is appriciated.

Ask for whatever you're going to need, basically. I asked for the IFSTA curriculum, a laptop and projector to display it on, and manual/study guide packets.
I know a nearby department that asked for money to pay an instructor to come do their class in-house. They also used some of their excess funds to purchase a SmartBoard for their training room.
I've heard of departments asking for some of the basic props, like forcible entry and live burn props, as well as rescue mannikins. Remember, you're going to have to maintain those skills.

Yeah, the state certification fees I figured but you guys are right. I wasn't sure how other things like books and aids would factor in.

Think the project through thoroughly from start to finish. How many hours, how many students, how long is it going to take, how do I get them to participate, do I need to pay an instructor? Look at testing are they going to have to go to the state fire college to test, what about gas money to go there, hotel rooms while testing, per diem, fees for testing. Remember hands on, instructor led, leads to certification! Make it comprehensive. Think about what you have to have to do this, then ask for it.
