    Default POTUS in town...

I was at Starbucks getting an iced coffee knew something was up wen I saw a motorcade of black SUV's with police motorcycle escort come through town. My pager went off, requesting 3 firefighters and an officer for an Engine company detail starting at 1500 hours. I went to the firehouse to get my check and the Secret Service and a USAF fire chief were briefing the on duty personnel (Group 2) of what the procedure was for a Presidential helo landing. An ARFF unit was coming out from Hanscom AFB.

I drove by the airport I take flight lessons (Marlboro Airport, FAA designation 9B1) at and the motorcade that I saw come through town was parked on the tarmac... in the airport parking lot was 15 State Police cruisers, 12 motorcycles, the Police Chief, the Mayor and other City dignitaries.

The three helos came by the Casa de Gonz and landed at the airport about 10 minutes ago.

POTUS flew in to survey flood damage and get a briefing from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).

The 3 helos just flew over the house again.. probably headed to Hanscom for POTUS' departure.

the at the time president came here a few years ago. An airport firefighter I know told me they made them pull the trucks onto the station apron, and sit in the idling trucks when 15 minutes before the presidents plane landed and 15 minutes after it left. Even brought in regular suppression companies from the area to beef up staffing. He even said the SS has its own black ARFF truck that they bring, but I don't know if he was just messing with me.

either way, sounds like they go all out.

I was stationed at Andrews AFB, MD (Home of Air Force One), during the mid '90's. We actually had to go sit on the flightline in our trucks 30 minutes prior to the president's arrival and for 10 additional minutes after he left.

There were times when we'd be out at night and we'd accidentally fall asleep and not come back to the station for an hour or two. *grin* oops.

Did he take off his cape when he landed.. oh wait, you said he took a helicopter.

    My bad.

Any Air Force aircraft POTUS is on is designated Air Force One, if the aircraft is from another service then it recieves the service deignation + One, for example: Marine One (normally a helicopter), Navy One (used when President Bush flew onto an aircraft carrier), etc.

But it is a beautiful aircraft! I was working the day he came into Albany; it is just breathtaking! I've seen a boatload of different aircraft and this one was just amazing... Got some gorgeous photos of it (but didn't get the tour!!!)

And, it's more than just another airplane; the airframe, the power plants, brakes are definitely not stock... The communications system on board would keep me in my glory for years, and the countermeasures!!! Have seen both the 28000 and 29000 here (doesn't really matter much, I'd take either one!!!)

This is true. I was just thinking we had the real Air Force one, the 747. When most people think AF1 they think of the 747

Ay aircraft the president flies on is "real". He could come in in a Waco biplane and that would be Air Force One.

    Cool Balanced Budget

We could almost balance the federal budget if the president just stayed in Washington.
Saw a documentary of the logistics of a presidential trip to Manhattan. 3 helicopters from the White House to Andrews AF base. With the fire engine on duty at the White House in the background. Three helicopters are always used to mask which one the president is riding in.
Air Force One plus the spare 747 and a C-17 Transport (to carry the presidential limo and secret service vehicles) to JFK. In the mean time the three helicopters have flown to JFK to be ready to carry the president to a pier on the Hudson River in lower Manhattan.
The C-17 has arrived before Air Force One and off loaded the vehicles which proceed to the Pier in Manhattan. Once the president rides in the three helicopters to the Pier, the Motorcade proceeds to the final destination.
More than 200 pilots, crew, Secret Service and support people are involved in addition to all the local NYPD, FDNY, and FBI people involved. What a production. I doubt if Nuclear Weapons transport gets a fraction of the security that the president gets.
