    Howling with wolves considered abusive

By Darcy Henton, Canwest News Service April 6, 2010

The next time you feel like joining a pack of wolves howling at the moon, think twice. You might not be welcome.

Alberta carnivore expert Cam McTavish says that the fad for communal "wolf howls" in Canadian parks and wilderness areas constitutes a form of animal harassment that could stress the animals and compromise their health.

"When we have commercial groups or individuals or even researchers that are randomly calling wolf howls, I feel it is unwarranted," he said.

"In my opinion, it is a disturbing event in that wolves do react to these calls. If in their territory they hear another wolf howl, they have to respond to that wolf."

McTavish, 56, has spent 20 years studying wolves. Even inexperienced "wolf howlers" can elicit a response and prompt a wolf to move either toward the howler to investigate or to retreat, he said.

"If you are just playing around out there for whatever reason, it's a dirty trick to stress these guys -- either psychologically stress them or physiologically stress them -- making them expend calories they just often can't afford to expend. Nature just does not allow for a lot of foolish, useless movement."

Parks Canada has banned the similar practice of "elk-bugling," a dangerous activity that can prompt bull elks to charge.

Aww,let the feel good types howl with wolves, swim with sharks, pet buffalo or whatever else they want to do with carnivorous predators.
Once the predators figure out that humans without firearms or archery gear are no threat and can easily be eaten or stomped to death, the genes for that brand of stupidity will be removed from the pool.
As Timothy Treadwell's dad had to have told him as a kid "You ain't never gonna be sh**,son!"
