Question Dream role once you get in to the department.

what is your dream role so far for once you get in?
Truckie, engine man....or women, rescue crew, hazmat, squad truck, EMS truck?
i just descovered yesterday that i am not fit to be a truckie, they took me up in the bucket.....and that was something i could not handle.

    what about you guys?

if you pick squad truck, please tell the role of the squad truck. i know all departments are different.

I wanted to get hired onto the Philadelphia Fire Department, and get assigned to either Ladder 16, Ladder 6 or Ladder 19, in that order.

The cards didn't play out like that though. I am not complaining.

Well anyone can pull hose in a building and open a nozzle bail.

It takes a special member to be a truckman. They usually operate with one other member or by their self. Not tethered to a hose but go up and about the fire to ventilate so the water guys can apply their water.

Most engine guys are scared of the stick and stay far away from it if possible!

I guess truck/rescue. I really want to get into rope rescue, confined space, stuff like that. But doing the truck work would be awesome too.

Well, I'm assigned to the engine house now, but I started off on the rescue and truck at the main house. I'd gladly be demoted any day back to truck Lt.

i have great repect now for people on ladder trucks or that love to be on them, i went up in one of the ladder trucks with my department the other day, i quickly realized that it is not for me, i have respect for people who can stand being over 50ft in the air.

I seem to be a minority sometimes, but I really love the EMS. So, I guess either a fire based ambulance or squad, would be nice.

But, I'd like it to be rotated, so I could spend sometime on the other apparatus' too. Either way, our dept uses engines and quints, so we're always doing something fun.

What I enjoy doing is Rescue and EMS, but the fact of the matter is, im gona roll out on what every truck, and what ever calls the white hat tells me to, and just be happy that I get a paycheck every two weeks.

I am a EMS Truck type of person...not that I don't like firefighting...I just like being directly involved in the care of the patient. I have been training for 6 months to become a EMT-B and I am going to use those skills throughout the rest of my life. I am eventually going to go to school to become a Nationally Registered Paramedic.

    Just my opinion...
