I know Gary Fire Department staffs about 12 firehouses and runs multiple working fires a shift. I heard they have 6 ambos and run over 26,000 ems runs a year not even counting fire calls. I was curious do Gary Engine/ Quint's just run on fire related calls, or are the engines EMT-BLS level, Medic-ALS level or a mix of both? Do the engines/ Quint's assist the ambos and chase EMS runs with the ambo, or if the ambo is out of quarters. With their ambos running that many calls, what happends when they are out of quarters all day and get EMS runs, do the engine companies take them in? Thanks.

My old department shared a border street with Gary. When I was there (5yrs ago) suppression companies did respond to EMS runs. If i remember correctly, they follow suit w/most fire based EMS....ie..Respond to critical calls and/or when medic unit has an extended eta...I dont believe they have ALS fire companies. EMS is "seperate, but equal"...that is EMS personnel are not FFs (at least thats how it was when i was living up that way).
Gary as well as GFD, has fallen back on hard financial times again. Last I heard only a handful of firehouses were open on a daily basis. Not sure how many medic units they get to man these days. I know that not every firehouse has a medic unit in it. Mybe 5 or 6 at the most.
There is a Gary Brother here on the forums you can look up and ask more specific questions (I know is real name...jst cant remember is forum name). He is a good guy, and Im sure would answer any question youve got.
Ill ask some of my buddies from up there too..
