Firefighters dig in for the community

Volunteer brigade puts muscle and money into turning an neglected old park into an inviting greenspace

Thanks to their efforts, a former park at the corner of Wain and West Saanich roads -- next to the Wain Road firehall -- has been turned into an inviting greenspace once again.

"Now it's there for the community like it used to be," said North Saanich fire Chief Gary Wilton.

The 40-person volunteer contingent that forms the bulk of the department made it all happen, he said.

"With their own time and money they decided to make a park out of it. They did it all on their own, there was no direct municipal money at all going into the park."

The space has been named North Saanich Firefighters' Commemorative Park, since it has a plaque that recognizes the fire department's service to the public.

"As things were moving along and discussed, it was decided it would be nice to put in a memorial for our life members," said Wilton.

An opening ceremony for the park brought out local leaders as well as

Lt.-Gov. Steven Point and B.C. Fire Commissioner Rebecca Denlinger. Firefighters Greg Smith and Ray Halsall were presented with provincial exemplary-service medals at the event.
