Default Santa Clara County Fire Department

This thread is for anyone participating in the SCCFD hiring process. Feel free to ask questions or if you have any reasonable information please share. I too will be taking the test in August so I am not a member of the department or any of the cities it serves. Good luck to all!

In past tests they've only invited around 100 candidates to go forward in the hiring process.

Nor I... as this is my first time applying, should I be expecting something in the email or a physical letter?

Does it usually take this long to hear back? I noticed that the FF/Paramedic posting was just taken down...maybe they were waiting to do testing at the same time?

I have heard from someone inside of SCCFD that "a lot of guys are retiring" not sure how many a lot is, but it sounds like the class could be a good size. another good question is how many medics vs emts they are planning on hiring because they could probably easily fill a few recruit classes with just medics. any insight?

Plan on some of those positions to be taking by the laid off San Jose firefighters. Regardless if County comes out and says it or not, the word is they will be looking out for those guys.

California state law is laid off firefighters have first preference to other jobs in the state as long as they can pass all the hiring steps. But I've seen some candidates who have been laid off with the attitude that they were owed other jobs. Guess what? They failed their oral boards with their attitude. I talked to some of these guys at a large city test. I had to shake my head.

    They do for Alameda

This exam is open to the first 60 qualified applicants. Primary preference will be given to individuals who are on the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee’s Displaced Firefighter list and others recently laid off; Non-displaced Firefighter applicants may be considered if an insufficient number of displaced Firefighter applications are received...Possession of a valid Layoff or Impending Layoff notice dated after November 1, 2008 for initial primary hiring preference.

Hopefully those openings soak up some of the SJ layoffs

Word is Santa Clara Co., Sac Metro, and Long Beach will be looking at some of them. Im sure theres alot of other smaller sized departments who are also looking at them as well, considering they could save some $$$ with an abbreviated academy to get them online.

Anyone have any word on how many went forward and how many they are looking to get? I got my letter too. I'm very excited about this one in particular, having lived in SCC for my whole life.
