I was looking at maybe taking the hzmat ops class in Cherry Valley in September. I would like other's opinions on the class. The only experience I have in hzmat is being a first responder in an industrial setting and hzmat awareness. My concern is this class may be beyond my talents at this time. So if anyone has taken the course and could offer some feed back, it would be most appreciated.

HAZMAT Opps is basically just a decon class. You will learn how to setup a decon line and run it. There is a little more about identification and recognition, however the main focus is decon, PPE, basic monitoring and hazard recognition.

I agree with the post above mine, when you first start, you will think this is way out of your league, but trust me, it is not that terrible, and a great certification to have, and even better to have it if you are looking at getting hired full time.

I never had the desire to be a Haz-mateer. I had to take the Ops class for work...and really enjoyed it. Remember, the whole point of the class is to teach you the skills. You will build on your knowledge from the awareness class and learn how to dress out the proper way in level B suits.
The success of a fire department depends on the willingness of its members to put aside their differences and work for the benefit of the dept/community.
