    Default Miami Dade Fire rescue

    Well its been over a year since we took the test (MDFR) and nothing....have been hearing rumors of them hiring in 2011 or 2012, if thats the case then the 5600 or so on the current list will be eligible. Any chance we may hear something for the cpat before the year is over? if anyone has any info on MDFR please share. I was at the Orientation with Miami Beach in Dec. and heard their cheif say there were going to be mass hirings from different departments within the tri county area. he also referanced MDFR.

    I know it is "tougher" to get picked up some where south of the Palm Beach Countyline. How about looking statewide for work? Orange County Fire Rescue is accepting applications now. Their hiring cycle is no where near as long as MDFR's.

    for whatever its worth, my Lt. (@ Miami Beach) was just saying yesterday that Miami Dade is going to hire ALOT of firefighters very shortly. He has a good friend that is an officer for them.

    I heard that too from a few friends who work for MDFR, but again, just hearsay. They just built and opened a multi-million dollar training center, so who knows?

    Thanks for the info gentlemen, i have been hearing the same from different people. hopefully it will be soon......i heard they were going to put through three classes before the budget cuts put a stop to it. this was over a year ago. my guess they will atleast have five classes thats about 150 guys/girls give or take in 2011. Our list is good until 2012. in the past, they have hired about 700 people over a 3 yr span. lets keep our fingers crossed.

    Interesting....I know someone that works for MDFR too. I will ask her what she knows.

    There's a HR manager at Miami/Dade that I communicate via email with. She oversaw the testing we all went through in 2009 and was very helpful in explaining their hiring process, as well as giving me any nuggets of info she comes across.

    This is what she told me in January:

    "I just checked with the management of MDFR and they there are no changes in the hiring policies. I don’t think they will be doing any hiring for quite a long time to come….but as for changes in policies, there are none. Remember, for any updates, MDFR will be updating the www.miamidade.gov/mdfr/hiring.asp site.



    PS. But always feel free to check with me too"

    And this is what she told me yesterday, August 9:

    "I wish I could give you some good news….but as far as I know they still do not have plans to hire in the near future. Our budget year begins on October 1st so we will know more by then. You are right, though, they have not hired off the current list and in fact they extended that list to be ‘valid’ until May 2012. So we will not test again until perhaps April of 2012. The Fire Dept’s website www. miamidade.gov/mdfr/hiring.asp will keep people up to date as to what they are doing…when it begins to happen. You can also check the Firefighter Applicant Hotline at 786 331 4700. If that is still activated, they are supposed to keep that updated as well.

    Our budget needs to be balanced and we are expecting more layoffs, but again, we won’t know until the budget hearings are over at the end of September…..and the new Fiscal year begins in October. At least, thought, if you are on the current list, your name will remain on the list until 2112.

    I wish you much success and hopefully things will turn around soon!!"

    And this is an excerpt from the proposed 2010-11 budget:

    "FY 2010 - 11 Proposed Resource Allocation and Multi-Year Capital Plan
    Department Operational Unmet Needs:

    Provide funding to purchase vehicle for the Heavy Fleet Replacement Program

    Hire 27 Firefighters for operations to staff Fire Boat 2, diver operations, and training staff

    Hire 48 administrative positions and provide additional funding support for administrative
    operations, public education programs, technology enhancements, educational seminars, travel,and debt service for new bonds

    Hire 189 firefighters to staff new services for Aerial 8 at Aventura, Rescue 13 at East Kendall,
    Rescue 17 at Virginia Gardens, Rescue 36 at Hammocks, Rescue 45 at Doral, Rescue 55 at Saga Bay, Engine 57 at West Kendall, Rescue 60 at Redlands, Rescue 61 at Trail, Engine 65 at East Homestead, Rescue 66 at Village of Homestead, Rescue 67 at Arcola, and Aerial 68 at Dolphin

    Install automatic gates and fences at various stations"

    So, make of that what you will.

    FY 2010 - 11 Proposed Resource Allocation and Multi-Year Capital Plan
    Department Operational Unmet Needs:

    The key word here is "unmet." Plans to expand operational service where very ambitious, but changes in property tax law put an end to those plans. The department relies on property taxes for 85% of its funding.

    I have heard the same rumors about hiring, but I can't see how it is possible. If the commission does not support the same funding amount as last year (which is a tax increase) then there will be service reductions. Perhaps if the economy improves or another means of funding (not likely) is implemented then MDFR will expand to provide more service.

    In order to make up for the loss revenue, additional fire companies were scrapped and instead BLS transport units were put into place. The idea was to free up units on BLS medical calls while generating additional revenue. Who knows what will happen. Because of vacancies, OT has increased which looks bad. The answer has been to hire more to reduce the OT, but then scramble to justify additional positions when funding is reduced.

    The last two posting make sense to me.
    FDs want to hire fill vancancies and keep OT down and not bust the budget, but the declining tax revenue situation dogging everyone these days, it is hard for them to do anything and work with what they have or getting.
    My friend with MDFR hasn't returned my message and usually is pretty prompt, especially with a subject like this one.
    To you guys that are looking to get picked up somewhere, I will revert back to what I said last week. You gotta look state-wide and see what's out there. OCFRD is currently taking applications to hire. Yes, Metro-Orlando isn't Miami, but in this crummy economy, can't be too picky.
    When I read postings about a department's candidate list stretching into the thousands and they are back logged two or three years back, that's discouraging to me, and makes me wanna look elsewhere. "No one is getting any younger by waiting."

    True there is no funding for hiring, however there still is a source for alternative funding and that's the fire fee that was voted down last year. The county spent alot of money exploring this avenue for creative/alternative funding and I believe they will not let $$$$$$$ go to waste. In Miramar, where I live, the fire fee doubled in one year from $120 to $240 a year..just opened my tax bill in Nov one day and there it was...i would not be surprised if a fire fee is instated over night on September 30th and on October 1 it is implemented. Kind of how the health care bill....Remember on Christmas Eve it was approved in the house and later on in the senate a few months later.....government works the same at the local level. If the rumors surfacing are correct, this could be the altermative.

    Brother and Sisters,

    Early this morning the Board of County Commissioners approved the Fire Rescue budget and the millage at the Mayor's recommended level. The vote for our millage was 7-6. Commissioners Gimenez, Martinez, Souto, Diaz, Sousa, and Heyman voted against us.

    Our department will now be funded with no service reductions and no layoffs of sworn personnel. To the contrary, the budget includes restoration of a previously cut service. This was a very long and sometimes challenging budget process. In the final days we spent many hours meeting with Commissioners trying to solidify the votes we knew we had, and trying to hold on to some that we were told were going to flip on us.

    In the end, as a Union we were successful in our lobbying efforts. It also took a working relationship with the department, and a unified front to get it done. Our ability to convince commissioners on our service is directly related to the work each and every one of us do day in and day out. We encourage you to continue to be the dedicated professionals you are. Each patient or person you encounter and leave with a positive impression goes a long way when we call on the Commissioners for support.

    Thank you to all the members who showed up for the photo shoot and pink truck signing at the commission chambers, and to those who stayed into the early morning. At a time when many locals around us are losing benefits and seeing major changes, we are very thankful that we survived this budget process without any reductions. We will now start focusing and planning for our upcoming contract negotiations.

    I recently have heard rumors and talk that miami dade county HR, has been contacting people. Has any one else heard this rumor? I am not talking about the Beach, I am talking about MDFR.

    My family knows many personal in MD HR, and all rumors are just that; rumors. They "hope" to be financially stable to hire in 3+ years for PD and FR.

    3 year wait at the very least. They're budget has been shot to hell since the economy tanked.
