Default How many AFG Grants have you been awarded

I was curious as to how many AFG grants departments have been awarded since the beginning. I'm not looking for safer or fire prevention, just the number of regular AFG grants.

    1 3/4

O3 Turnout, SCBA's, Hose, Nozzles, Tic and Refurbish a truck
09/10 Regional Radio Interoperability (didn't write but was part of planning and implementation)

missed on 3 others (Rescue/Ric Truck) so I went through local, state grants as well as private, commercial donations and raised the money to refurbish a surplus property vehicle.

Currently holding my breath on a new Pumper.

2003 - PPE, 4 SCBA to replace old Scott 2's
2006 - Exhaust extraction system, Fire & CO alarm system, Station generator
    2007 - PPE, replaced remaining SCBA's
2009 - Attack, backup, supply hose, Master stream device, hose & pump testing equip, hose rack
    2010 - TIC (Reduction & 1199A so far...)

Applied in '04 for portable generators, portable pumps, multi-gas meter & radiation detection meter
Applied in '05 for multi-gas meter, TIC & station generator
Applied in '08 for vehicle (water tender)
Applied in '09 for vehicle (water tender)

Applied in '10 for regional communications for 6 FD's: still awaiting (hopeful)

Received multi-gas meters on CEDAP award in '06
Received portable generators on local EnCon award
Received portable pumps with excess funds...

So the only thing left on my original list is a 2,000 gallon water tender - AFG: you reading this???

AFG's been good to us - we'd still be using 3/4 boots, Scott 2's and 25 year old hose without the awards, not to mention being in the dark for the December ice storm without them!

Assisted neighboring FD last year who received 1199A and municipality turned down a $57,000.00 award for PPE & SCBA

Assisted 2 neighboring FD's this year with PPE applications (still awaiting word...)

I have to agree with you...AFG has been very good to many Departments. In my community, we were down to a 1978 Telesquirt as the first due apparatus. PPE was 13 years old and the equipment on the trucks including hose and tools were 30 years or more. Never had a HRT or a breathing air system. I used to go to FDIC and say, "need it, need it, got to have it".

We developed a plan based upon a risk analysis of the critical equipment we needed to obtain. The City bought into this plan and began to chip away at some of the major items while we wrote grants for the other identified needs. Since our first award in 2002, the Department and the City, working together has transformed the Department into a very progressive, well trained and properly equipped firefighting team. This would not have been possible without AFG.

Most importantly, as many on this forum do, we took our success at writing grants and helped the neighboring departments by writing grants for them or hooking them up with the talented individual on this forum. We also sponsored AFG seminars so that we could get the information out to the neighboring communities. In our region, we now have a new communications platform linking all mutual aid departments and have succeeded in getting one Department a new fire station.

It is nice to see similar results posted in this forum. It is also important to note that there is a great deal of knowledge available from reading through all of these posts. I have learned a great deal from many of you.

VERY well said! I would say our department was very much like yours 10 years ago. Now we have all new SCBA, TOG, Extrication suits, full compliment of rescue tools and stabilization equipment, new supply hose, new vent saws, and a NEW OUTLOOK. We are now able to focus our limited funds on continous ways to improve the safety, health, and wellbeing of ourselves and our communities. That has meant an increase of training, interoperability with other agencies, and increase in public knowledge. With (And I have my fingers crossed BIG time on this one) the 2010 AFG we will have portables for every riding position and have entry level physicals, immunizations, health screenings, and a Health and Safety Program to take care of our folks. They deserve it afterall!

2003 PPE & Equipment awarded early but not sure which round
    2005 PPE & Equipment awarded round 1

    2005 (DJ Fire Prevention)
    2007 (DJ Pumper/Tanker)
    2007 (DJ Fire Prevention)
    2008 PPE & Equipment awarded round 11
    2009 Tanker/Tender awarded round 1

    2009 (DJ PPE & Equipment)
    2009 (DJ Fire Prevention)
    2010 (Brush Truck, no movement)
    2010 ( PPE & Equipment, no movement)
2010 (SAFER for hiring just submitted)

Also this was my first year helping other departments. I have three tanker/tender grants and one ops grant with no movement but all under last years funding allowance.

All my DJ's were by peer so at least I am making it past the computer on those rejected.

1st attempt for AFG was 07; failed and reapplied in 08; since then:

08 - PPE, SCBA, and rescue tools
09 - RIT packs, air bag system, and thermal imagers
10 - mobile cascade and rehab trailer combo (new 1199A update, so very hopeful!)

3 of 4 attempts. I have a reduction on this years and that would make it...
