My second interview is slated for May 13th...

I was told that there were 2,754 people they interviewed for the first oral boards. This was something another interview-e told me before the boards. Regardless of the numbers, i'm just going to continue practicing and trying to arrange practice board interviews in my neighboring departments.

    Good luck to you all.

Just spoke to Personnel Department (Fire and Police exams). 1300 people are invited back for the 2nd oral board. Good luck to all!

    Good luck everyone!

Opposite for me. Wish I could say I feel good about my second interview. Froze up on one question..... Unsettled me for the rest.

The one thing that really throws me off in these interviews is the lack of expression from the interview panel. No smiles, no frowns, no nods. They are very good at looking completely impartial...which also makes them look like they don't like anything you say.

My first interview wasn't very good. Maybe you and I will end up in the middle of the pack somewhere.

That's the logical assumption. Like I said, the information was third-hand. The person I talked to didn't have any other information.

I also heard, third hand, that some recently laid off Seattle firefighters said there are no plans to hire anyone anytime soon. I think, though, that they needed a new list, even if they can't hire anyone for another year.
There have not been any SFD firefighter layoffs. Get your facts straight before you post.

As for the expressionless faces; yeah, hard to gauge how you're doing if no feedback at all and kind of deflates the interviewee's enthusiasm.

As I said, the information was third hand and I presented it as such.

I'll delete that portion of the post since your information seems to be more concrete.

Dude it took less than five minutes to confirm. Verify before you freak everyone out like that

Yeah like me As Bam said, no layoffs yet, should hear in the next few weeks how the Chief plans to address the Mayor's request for budget cuts.

I've heard rumors of the same thing...But I've also heard that the goal is to move that academy date up.

As I understand it, the problem is funding, as it is in every city across America right now, so hopefully they can get creative in the budget/management meetings...

I'm sure he'll try to screw essential services, destroy traffic infrastructure and reward cyclists.

He'll probably have all the beds removed from the stations too - since he doesn't think you guys sleep at work

Friend of a friend says the budget involves a 4% cut. (Mayor's request? mandate? final?..... unknown. He only heard the number).

    Default 2011 Budget Cuts

From the Seattle Times: "The City of Seattle will cut almost $10 million from its 2011 general-fund budget to meet projected shortfalls through the end of the year."

"The Fire Department plans to save $707,000 by REDUCING RECRUITMENT EFFORTS (my caps) and delaying the purchase of equipment."

Not sure what the reduction in recruitment efforts entails, but it can't be good. There should be more info avail when the 2nd oral board results come out. Just a FWIW, but there are more SFD members in their 40s than in their 20s. Hang in there. Your time will come.

I wonder if they were waiting to hear on the budget before letting us know our status. That would make sense.

    Disheartening, but not unexpected.
