Hello. My son is 20 years old and is currently attending St. Louis University. He is interested in becoming a doctor. As part of his degree, he is required to do so many volunteer hours. He is interested in doing hours in the fire service in any capacity. I checked with StLFD and they are not interested due to liability reasons. I understand this. However, he isn't necessarily looking to ride a machine...however if allowed to do so, he would certainly love to. My question is this: Is there a department in St. Louis County that would be interested in a 20 year old young man who wants to volunteer where ever he can in what ever capacity? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

STLCO volunteering
As far as I know there aren't many departments in St. Louis County that have volunteers. Most county departments have evolved into fully paid career departments and districts. The few that I know of are Eureka, Kinloch, and Affton (closest to SLU). If he wants to go out a little further, he can find many organizations in Jefferson and St. Charles County that are always looking for volunteers.

This is correct however a lot of department that do accept out of district volunteers meaning do not live in the district in which you are applying for only accept applications at certain times. Also these department usually do an application process. Also for all st louis county department you have to have the st louis county fire academy which is not the easiest to get sometimes.
