    Default Personal Gear Questions

Hi, I am looking at some personal equipment to last a long time.
I was eyeing those kangaroo gloves from protech-8, and a colored nomex.
would the gloves be worth it at 88?
would the nomex dye be a hazard?

Wear the PPE your department issues.

+1. Here if injured, our safety office confiscates PPE to determine if its use/nonuse/misuse contributed to the injury. If found to be wearing PPE other than what was issued, member risks being reported (disciplinary charges).

What if I am at a department that takes low bid on everything? There should be no reason why an individual can't purchase and use thier own peice of gear as long as it meets or exceeds the department's standards. I have never heard of anyone not winning a benefit claim because thier gear was better than what the department gave them.

And I am sure someone will try the whole "non-uniformity" thing. My gloves being different than the guy next to me won't confuse anyone. If it does you may want to seek another place of employment.

Did Bossier Booby Callahan give you permission to wear personal gear? He might not allow you to do that. Better check with him first.

May be some kin to the other one and another yardfireman.

As Mrpita said, you wear whats the department issues. If you get hurt in it, you are covered. If you have something else on that isn't issued and get hurt, you are up shyt creek.

-Do you do mutual aid with his company? Do you cringe if dispatched to their area??

-Do you receive mutual aid from them? Do you cringe if you know they are coming in????

-You are assigned to Ladder 1. Do you receive extensive training in ground ladder use, whether you have buildings over two stories in height in your area or not????

-Does anyone down there, other than Bossier Booby, take him seriously? Because many of us on here think that not only is he an azzwipe, but he is an insult to our profession and a coward. Inquiring minds want to know.

So are you a yardfirmen like he is??

Wouldn't risk his life or others by taking it inside a structure or not trying to save his wife or kids, if the house or car they were in was completely involved??

Is everyone form that parish taught the same way?

I haven't had the honors to cringe, I mean serve with bosser bob. I am an active volunteer, but most of the full time guys don't like training, they don't want to get sweaty or some stupid reason they have. So, whenever we have the gung-ho volunteers, someone drives the trucks to the highschool and we get on the roof and start practicing roof techniques, etc. Sometimes we do have search training, but never good training. That's why I keep asking non-stupid questions.

Also, Bossier Bob is respected down here (you know he fight a ferry fire once) he teaches most of our training classes including the art of reading smoke. Most people don't like his training techniques, but here's one thing: His ENTIRE class passed 100% on their first try obtaining FF1 certs. (yes, there was more than 5 people who took the class), Bob earned his spot as a Public Educator and his Sr. FF spot, and his dispatcher certifications.

Anyone can pass 100% when the guy is teaching the test! Anyone who has a half a brain can remember and memorize the answers.

We've had guys in my state do that as state instructors. Well, they aren't state instructors any more.

Is he State Certified from the LA Firemans School?

Im a little slow -- please clarify the "non-stupid" question about " the hazard of nomex dye". And just for the heck of it -- what do you plan to put in those little kangaroo pouches ?

    Say it isn't so!

    Class time..

Nomex and Kelvar is a Fiber.

It is natual in color. Meaning it has no color when the fiber is made.

If a department wants the gear to be what ever color, white, yellow, red, tan, black, green, blue, etc., then the fabric is dyed and the gear is then made in what ever the customer wants the color to be.

    End of class....

BTW - your not going to be chewing on the gear, but wearing it for what it's designed for.

    I don't work as a state instructor.

I do have Instructor I/II and experience working as a specialist instructor in another state.

Technically, and I know this is very screwed up, in LA you do not have to have a certification in a subject area to teach that subject area at the department level. So in other words, somebody without a FFI cert can teach a FFI class at the department level.

I never "teach a test". In fact, I left teaching at the elementary school level because that was pretty much what the job had become. Do I tell the guys that there are certain areas that you are likely to see more questions from than other areas? Sure. And do we discuss what material the state considers more important than others? Yes. But never had and never will teach a test.
