    Question Blocking the road way

    Can any one tell me about blocking the road with an engine. even when the police do not won't us to. don't know the Alabama laws on that one. we need to block road for our safty and everyone else safty to.

    We do it at my department. Sometimes the troopers want us to move the truck but if we are out there and our safety is involved, we keep the protection of the truck blocking a lane. One of the companies on the other side of town was protecting the scene and a trooper was parked behind it, well the trooper crown vic took a direct hit and the engine had a little damage but was able to stay in service after being inspected. The troopers car left on a rollback wrecker white the fire engine was driven away by the firefighters that it protected. Just my 2 cents.

    Saw a police car get slammed by a DUI right after a trooper demanded we move our apparatus. It'll be a cold day you now where before I leave my firefighters exposed.

    Default moving

    In California the CHP get a little antsy when we parked our Engines on the freeway. They understand the safety aspect of our moves. I never have nor never did ever move my Engine to expose my crew in situations that involve crew safety.

    There are several other threads discussing this topic, most on here agree that apparatus should be positioned to protect the scene.

    We block the scene with apparatus the best we can. We also try to work with the police to keep the road open as much as possible. To date I have not any issues with the local LEOs, but I would not move the apparatus if it put my crew in danger.

    One advantage here in Maryland is that we have control of the scene if there is hose on the ground. Deploying a line adds to safety, but it also gives us control of the scene.

    Plain and simple....a meeting any/all police in your area will help correct this situation more than anything else.

    Friendly discussions before anything happens will get more accomplished.

    Getting everyone to work together is the main point.


    Getting into ****ing matches and B.S. on the scene is too late...you will most likely lose in the long run with that approach.

    Good point bones. We had the head of the Sheriff's department patrol division sit down with the Chief's counsel to come up with a joint SOP. They better understand what we need to do and we better understand what they need.

    Another point... when you say blocking the road, that can mean a lot of things.

    We block lanes of travel very judiciously in consideration of our safety and the safe flow of traffic. Completely stopping traffic can have its own problems.

    Default Blocking

    The CHP have blocked whole freeways for us when the time was needed. Then there were times when they tried to hurry us up so they can reopen it up no Pi##ing matches were called for.
