Default Chicago Firefighter Missing, Several Injured After Wall Collapse

    Happening now:

    http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2...collapses.html

One firefighter was missing and three were injured after a wall collapsed in a 3-11 alarm fire at an abandoned South Side commercial building, authorities said.

Initial reports indicated as many as four firefighters were trapped. Three were pulled out and rushed to hospitals while dozens of firefighters continued to search through the rubble.

Police squad cars escorted two ambulances north on Lake Shore Drive to Northwestern as ramps were closed to clear it of traffic, according to fire communications. Another firefighter was taken to St. Bernard's Hospital.

One of the firefighters at Northwestern was described as "grave." Conditions on the other two were not immediately available.

The fire broke out about 6:54 a.m. in the abandoned one-story brick building in the 1700 block of East 75th Street.

The fire was raised to two and then three alarms to save the trapped firefighters. A "mayday" was called. Firefighters also reported having problems with frozen hydrants.

Fourth FF has been pulled out, no word on condition. Unclear if more are unaccounted for, due to the fact the tone-out came at shift change, and it's unclear who responded from each company.

PLEASE KEEP CFD IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS!

Seriously, that is all you can say. How do you know that there wasnt anybody in there?? squatters use vacants all the time and set fires to stay warm. Not saying that's what happened here, but it does happen. I'm sure they went in because they had good reasons to believe that someone may be in there or that they could advance and attack the fire without these disasterous situations occuring. Atleast wait till the story comes out before you start asking stupid questions!!!

I agree with joe - for an abandoned structure?? must be more to the story.

The only answer I can come up with that doesn't result in me thinking somebody should be fired ASAP is that there may have been a credible concern that there were people (homeless, tresspassers, etc) trapped inside the building. If that be the case, I could forgive this incident.

If there were FFs inside for no other reason than fire suppression on an abandoned building, the IC should lose his job.

If the building collapsed outward and trapped FFs on the exterior, the safety officer/zone commander should be fired for allowing members of a defensive attack crew to work inside the collapse zone of the building.

Rough day for CFD. They had a fatal fire in the Back of the Yards neighborhood earlier this morning.

today is also the anniversary of the Union Stockyard Fire in which 21 CFD members lost their lives. My thoughts and prayers are with the 4 FFs and their families.

THANK YOU. Dear god, the rest of you ****ers can't even let them leave the scene before saying people should lose their jobs.

Thank you everyone who have sent their prayers.

    To ATFDFF and MIKEYLIKESIT:

I know you guys have been around a lot longer than I have on these boards. I also realize that you apparently have a problem with something I posted in this thread. If I'm off base with this, I apologize, but I feel it needs to be said:

You guys read into the post what you wanted and declared that I was somehow out-of-line for what I said. You jumped all over the part that said If x occurred then y should be fired while completely neglecting the very first part that said if x occurred then I am good with what happened (operationally speaking).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my response to the original question of "How could this happen at an abandoned warehouse?" was to offer the 3 possible (general) scenarios as to how it could happen. I don't see how that falls into the category of wild speculation, but maybe your definition and my definition are completely different.

Again, if I've misread your comments then I apologize. If I haven't, well, it is what it is.

    You are out of line.

[Updated at 10:22 a.m. ET] All firefighters are accounted for after a roof collapse at a fire on East 75th near Stony Island on Chicago's southside this morning, Larry Langford with Chicago Fire told CNN.

Several firefighters were trapped in the collapse. A dozen firefighters have been transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to serious. There are no confirmed fatalities at this point.

For me, it is the fact that there was NO attempt to show that you are in the least bit concerned about the guys.
