Gliese 581 has been the subject of a "huge amount of attention" in the quest to discover the first habitable planet; in 2010, attention focused on unconfirmed planet g, which would have been close to the middle of the star's habitable zone, but more recently, in a study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, planet d "can be considered the first confirmed exoplanet that could support Earth-like life."

U-Boat 582 was sunk 5 Oct, 1942 south-west of Iceland, by depth charges from an American Catalina aircraft. The sub sunk 7 ships in its short tour, of over a year.

The second USS Thresher (SSN-593) was the lead ship of her class of nuclear-powered attack submarines in the United States Navy. Her loss at sea during deep-diving tests in 1963 is often considered a watershed event in the implementation of the rigorous submarine safety program SUBSAFE.
