Almost every fire chief in America will state Fire Prevention is very important and the focus of the fire service and their department; however, often times actions are opposite. Many times the prevention divisions have no rank structure in line with the operations side, no ability to lateral transfer, and no clear path to the top. Thus prevention seems like a dead end road to up and coming firefighters and not appealing.
So what does your department do for the prevention track in your department? How do they make the prevention people feel inclusive OR exclusive? What do you think it would take to attract more people to prevention career paths? If you were the chief what would you do to encourage your brightest and most talented to come into prevention? Let your voice to suggestion and frustrations be heard…you never know who is reading!
