Thanks for the info fire49. I am signed up for some state fire marshal classes already. Does anybody else have any advice for me any and all is appreciated.

First of all congratulations on your choice of career paths. You will save more lives in a day in prevention than 30 years in suppression.

I would only like to suggest starting off as a firefighter, or keep your hand in the suppression side somehow. It is one thing to read a code and then enforce it, and another to experience 1st hand how codes – or lack of adherence to them – plays a role in life safety, fire, and fire spread.

In prevention we need to be educators, and I believe you will be much more effective in educating people on fire prevention issues when you have seen and experienced them first hand.

What you will need to get a hjob infire prevention will vary greatly from department to department.

Some departments promote to prevention from within requiring little if any training. You watch slome presenations and then you are off and on your way.

Most progressive departments require, at a minimum, Public Educator I as an entry level requirement if you are going to present canned or pre-designed programs. Public Educator II should be a requirement for anyone who will be designing or modifying programs. Public Educator III should be required for anyone managing or evaluating programs.

Instructor I is helpful.

NFA Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Specialist I & II should be the baseline for anyone delivering juvenile firesetter intervention programs.

Fire Inspector I should be the baseline for anyone doing fire inspections. Firer Inspector II to is reccommended and should be a requirement for anyone in an supervisroy or management role over an inspection program.

Some departments, especially in the southwest and west coast are hiring folks with an educational background to do much of thier public education as well, so talk to some of them if you are in that area and get thier advice on which way to head.
