interesting im noticeing most departments use helmet color to show who the explorers are when i was an explorer from 2001-2006 all we had to diffrentiate us from the actual firefighters was the old black gear from the mid-early 90s and a bright orange vest that said explorers

Senior firefighter functions at roughly the rank of LT.
They are assigned to a particulate apparatus and are responsible for checking it weekly, as well as the tools, and taking care of minor maintainence issues such as blown lights.
On the fireground they are assigned as team/crew leaders, sector officers, safety/staging officers and function as IC in the absence of a chief officer or captain.

We do not have LTs in my combo department.
The minimum requirements are an EMS certification, FFI, NIMS 100/200 and 2 years of service. Driver-Operator, FFII, as well as any other certification, will earn a pre-determined number of bonus points. The Senior Firefighter position for the rescue truck also requires specialized confined space and high angle training of at least 40 hours each and it's preferred that you are a member of the Specialized Rescue Team.
When there is an opening, you apply, and the Chief officers make the final decision based on training, experience and availability.

Firefighters have black helmets with black fronts.
Lt.'s have yellow helmets, or yellow fronts on black helmets.
Capt.'s have red helmets, or red fronts on on black helmets.
Chief's have white helmets.
