Post Uintah House fire injures two FF'rs

2 firefighters injured in Uintah house fire

JENSEN, Uintah County ó Two firefighters suffered minor injuries Thursday as one the oldest homes in this northeastern Utah community burned to the ground.

The home at 8251 E. 6000 South, which was built in about 1904, belonged to Gladys Peterson.

Peterson was home with her dog about 3 p.m. when she said she noticed flames at the back of the home where a propane heater was located. The 72-year-old widow said she grabbed the phone and called her son before fleeing her burning home with her dog.

Firefighters from Jensen and Naples faced several challenges in battling the blaze. Temperatures were well below freezing and Peterson's home was at the end of a single-lane drive about a quarter mile off U.S. Highway 40.

Crews were able to knock down the flames with the water carried on their trucks, but quickly realized that they did not have enough water to fully extinguish the fire.

Backup engines were called in as water transports, filling up about a mile away from the burning home at the Jensen Fire Station and ferrying water to the scene.

When that plan proved ineffective, crews were forced to spend 30 minutes laying 5-inch hose from the fire station to the Peterson home. That allowed firefighters to control the flames, but the home was already fully engulfed and ultimately collapsed.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries when they slipped on ice and fell, said Jensen Assistant Fire Chief Brett Lane.

One was treated at a Vernal hospital for an ankle sprain and was later released. The other received treatment at the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Lane said.
