Fire rips through window and auto glass shop in Roosevelt
ROOSEVELT — Investigators say a warming oven left unattended caused a fire Saturday that gutted a Roosevelt business.
A customer of The Glass Shoppe, 158 N. 300 East, said she spotted smoke coming from the business when she arrived about 2:20 p.m. to pick up a vehicle that had been left there to have its windshield replaced. The business was closed and the woman called 911.
Roosevelt police officer Mark Cornaby walks away from an unattended minivan he was trying to move as flames burn inside The Glass Shoppe on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, in Roosevelt. Deputy State Fire Marshal Steve Higley ruled the fire accidental Sunday, after spending the morning combing through the rubble of The Glass Shoppe with Roosevelt Fire Chief Lee Rockwood and Fire Capt. Tracy Hall.
"If something else happened, I can't see it with the evidence I've seen," Higley said.
Glass Shoppe owner Craig Phillips had been at the business Saturday to complete a few jobs, according to Rockwood, but had left around 11:30 a.m. with the intention of returning later in the day.
Fire officials believe Phillips forgot to turn off a small piece of equipment similar to a toaster oven, which is believed to have sparked the blaze, which was reported about 2:20 p.m.
"It's an expensive lesson," Higley said, adding that the fire caused an estimated $350,000 in damages to the shop.
Phillips said Sunday he plans to run his business out of his home in the near future. His mobile service truck was parked outside the business and survived the fire.
"I plan to be open Monday," he said.Front line since 1983 and still going strong
