LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Fire districts in Jefferson and Bullitt counties are mourning the loss of one of their own. Former Edgewood chief and current Fairdale and Nichols volunteer firefighter Danny Allen was hit and killed Feb. 9 on Interstate 71 while trying to help a co-worker.

Allen was working for a Shelbyville company on an environmental cleanup in Gallatin County. His loved ones tell us, it's no surprise he died trying to help someone.

"It's really been tough on all of us because it was so unexpected," said Fairdale Fire Chief Don Wittry, "Danny was such a great guy," he told us.

A respected and dedicated firefighter, loving father of two and a faithful friend. That was the description heard over and over of the 53-year-old Allen.

"He was never down about anything, he would make a joke and make you smile, that's the kind of guy he was," said Fairdale Captain Josh Underwood. "He loved his kids and loved his brotherhood of the fire department."

Allen was working an environmental cleanup on I-71 in northern Kentucky when he was killed.

"He was on his job and he was doing cleanup, they had it clearly marked," Wittry said.

Even though it was a safe zone on the highway, police say a box truck in the fast lane came up on a slow moving pick-up and veered right into the work area hitting Allen. Two other workers were hurt. One of them told Allen's family he tried to push them out of harm's way.

Wittry calls Allen's death a loss to the community because he loved helping people,

"He's been a supervisor and he knew what needed to be done, everybody respected him for that," said Wittry. "He was just a great friend and always happy about stuff so you know, this is really tough not only was he popular but, he was very good at what he did."

"It was devastating," said Fairdale firefighter Brad Dotson of hearing the news. "I couldn't believe it."

For young firefighters like Dotson, Allen was both a teacher and a friend.

"There was many a night where we sat down and had a conversation about the fire department and life in general," Dotson said. "He helped me out with a lot of stuff I was going through and he was always there for you."

Those in Allen's firehouse know he would want his death to help save another life. That's why they will continue asking drivers to be cautious around accident zones on the highway.

"Just be patient with us," Underwood said. "If that person in the car was someone in your family, you would want us to do the same for them."

Gallatin County Sheriff Josh Neale says he is not certain if this is a criminal case or just a terrible accident. The investigation is continuing.

Funeral arrangements were still pending for Allen, whose brother and son are both firefighters.
