Excuse my ignorance gentlemen, but what is the "rule of three" for hiring?

From what I understand it goes something like this. Candidates 1, 2 and 3 on the list will go take an interview. Out of those three, one person must be picked, so say candidate 3 does. Now everyone who was below candidate 3 moves up one spot, so now candidates 1, 2 and 4 are at the top of the list and it goes like that so on down the list. Also, I think it s mandatory in pennsylvania that if the position is between a veteran and a non-vet, the veteran has to be chosen.

You are correct. That is how Allentown Bethlehem and Easton hire. They have to hire 1 out of the three, or they can hire 2, or all three. If one of the 3 is a vet then they get a job. It is pretty ****ty that you could be #1 and never end up getting the job. The Physical test is a joke. Take the NJ test or CPAT down south. They are a better evaluation of physical fitness for the job. The fire departments in the LV operate with very minimal manpower, there is no room for dead weight.

So, they can hire those top 3 guys all at once and move onto the next 3 ranked below them? I personally am not worrying too much. With the potential for as many as 40 hires off the list, I am sure there will be plenty of non-vets being hired. Alot of people seem to have an issue with it but remember, not all vets were Angels when they were young either and they can still fail a background.

theres 2 classes...1 in july..and 1 in september..according to Atown HR...so 20 per class makes sense, since the talk about 40 hires...just a little FYI

Correct, They can hire 1, 2, or 3 out of any threesome. You are also correct in that just because you are not a vet doesn't mean you don't have a shot. Many people fail the physical or the background. Just make sure you dot every i and cross every t when you are filling out paperwork. Study your A** off and practice the physical also may want to review interview questions if you see that you will be getting that far.

I know they have been averaging 5-10 Atown guys in their academy classes twice a year.

Have the discipline to be away from friends and family for 6-7 months in a sh*thole country and still get the job done under extreme pressures, without complaint. Maybe that's why so many fire departments are focused on hiring vets.
Normally I would respond like the average alpha male, but I'll take that one on the chin because honestly your right and at this point there's not much I can do about that. Shoulda woulda coulda...can't live with regrets. Your also correct that I handled it the wrong way, to those I offended I apologize, no disrespect intended vets trust me. On my defense the whole process and vet status was completely explained wrong by certain individuals that should know what they are communicating. I did however find the correct explaination after I was ranting and acting childish. And I can't say I disagree sucks to be snubbed but that's life. And I gotta respect the vets preference and the banding process it is what it is.

I was told that approximately 1600 applications were downloaded from the site. Still waiting to find out how many actually submitted. Entirely new test, and test is to be about 5 hours long. Letters went out last week to those that applied.

One of the nice ladies helping to Administer the test mentioned something like 800 and 40 something registered. (Or something like that)

Anyone know how many people actually showed up? It seemed close to 800.

The only answer I got when I asked was "a few weeks". I think it was previously stated in this thread that the list has to be finalized by the end of April, so hopefully around the end of this month.

I called HR this morning. Results will be mailed in 3-4 weeks. In that letter will be your final score (including any Vets points) and your rank.

    Cool Results

Well Guys & Gals, the list is out. How far down the list do you think they will go? I heard that they are hiring least 40, now i also heard the grand total between now and next 2 years will be 40-80 hires but who really knows. I'm just curious as to how far they will get down the list. I am in the low 130's on the list, I'm crossing my fingers. Good luck to everyone else, this is a great opportunity to get into the business, especially since they are hiring so many

    Default Test

Don't feel bad the same happened to me. When i walked out of the testing site i was really excited and i felt i did well. My results were not horrible but were certainly not what i was expecting. When i think about it i wonder how poorly i did on the personality and life/work history portion of the exam. Same as you i answered honestly and maybe that brought my score down. The ability portion was easy but who knows maybe i did crappy on that part. These tests are designed to really make you think, they can mess with you mind. I know when i got done answering all 224 of those personality questions i didn't know what was up from down anymore. I feel that lying would not have been the answer either. A have spoken to a few guys who have taken these types of tests before and they have said that answering dishonestly still got them a crappy score, it seems the exam looks for consistencies in how you answer. They if you answer truthfully or not you have to maintain that mindset throughout the rest of the exam or grading process will pick that up. But hey what are ya gonna do, sometimes things are not meant to be.
