Prospective FF help

Already posted this elsewhere but got little reply

What should I expect as a 16 year old volunteer fire fighter? I understand that my involvement in calls will probably be limited until I hit 18 but how limited will it be? Would a 16 yr. old act basically for aid and assistance to the other FF? Is there anything I should know before contacting my local VFD? How much training is there to become a certified FF ?Thanks

^This is correct, but to sum this up quick for those others looking at this thread for reference.

As a 16 year old firefighter you will be a JR. you will be a support to all Firefighters on scene, wheather it be grabbing things off the truck for them, flaking hose, cleaning tools, keeping the house neat, etc. Your job as a JF FF is more important then you think. Now their is quite abit of training and such to become certified in FF1 or the equivilent. I'm not sure of how many hours but the book I last saw for FF1 is atleast 600 pages. And theirs 2 other books that go with it. But all this class time and training is worth it. You learn allot of things you will use, and allot of things to build off of on scene. As nothing ever goes the way it does in the books.
