I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced any issues with their fan clutch. We have a 2 year old engine with a Cummins 400 hp and had the seal on the fan clutch go. The air leak was so bad that we had to have it replaced. Of course, with the 1 year warranty, we received a bill for $2831 for the part plus installation. It just seemed odd for a seal to go with 2 years and 3800 miles on the engine. My thoughts were a bad batch of seals which would be reflective of more issues with other personnel or a bad assembly job.
Just checking for a symptomatic problem if it exists.
Thanks,
Dan

Out of 14 ISM400's with an air operated fan clutch, only one has needed a new fan clutch. 2 years old, 24,000 miles, done under warranty (4-5 months ago).
Not sure what you have for a warranty, but ours carry a 3/36 coverage. Yours should have been done under warranty by a Cummins repair center.
FM1I'm the one Fire and Rescue calls, when they need to be Rescued.

Check your warranty. Cummins used to start the warranty for engines in fire apparatus on the date of apparatus delivery not engine manufacture.
We do not rise to the occasion. We fall back to our level of training.

I spoke to our local dealer and they advised that Cummins 5-year warranty does not cover "bolt-on" components to the engine. So I have e-mailed our Cummins rep and asked for clarification.

The fan clutch manufacturer (Horton? Eaton? Bendix?) should have its own warranty. Your Cummins dealer should have been able to process that, or should have directed you to them. But if your apparatus builder was on the ball functioning as a one call, single responsibility company, they should handle it.
I did look at Horton's web site but couldn't find anything on their warranty.
