I am looking for some sample specifications that departments have written for a brush truck. My department will be purchasing one this year, and we have usually just solicited proposals. I am pushing to start writing our own specs and would like to get an idea of how to write them. You can email me at southwheatland514@juno.com

What you call a brush truck is a F 550 mini pumper at one station,a pick up with a slide-in at another, or a medium duty chassis with four wheel drive and 1500 gallons

We are looking at a pick-up style chassis with a flat bed. It will have a pump, tank, reel, and compartments on the back. 300 gallons water. 4 wheel drive. four doors.
And, we have all three types of the brush trucks in our county that you mentioned but I didn't even think to clarify.

While we have no specific specs, there are things that we wanted when we purchased a replacement for our Dodge 3/4 ton last year.
We wanted a minimum one ton with dual rear wheels, a gas engine as compared to diesel to reduce front-end weight and a winch on the front.
We were using an existing skid with a 300g tank and a 100 gpm pump.
We ended up going with a Ford F450 chassis.
I have found that it's pretty easy to start overspecing a brush truck. The simpler you keep it the better it will do it's job. And please don't overload it to the point where it can't go off road effectively.Train to fight the fires you fight.

A company near me has a F350 single wheel utility body with a 200 tank and 18 hp pump. The truck can carry alot of equipment. And has good off road performance. I have driven it and it handles nicely. I like the idea of the body over a pick up bed

The first thing I'd suggest is to not purchase a brand new chassis.
Find a "previously owned" dually 4x4 chassis, and put the widest tires with the most aggressive tread that will safely fit on it.
Then make sure it's got positive traction in the front and rear. Lockers are your friend, so long as no numbskull uses 4WD on pavement. The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism.
